Police recover
drowning victim
Goderich police are still requesting assistance in
tracing the movements of a drowning victim whose
body was pulled from Lake Huron near the south pier
Monday.
Police and fireman recovered the body of Ronald
Glen Geddes, 22, of R.Rk6 Goderich about 6.15
Monday evening, " several hours after he had been
reported missing.
Police were alerted to the situation about 6 am.
Monday when a fisherman; ound. a pile of clothes on a
bench at the end of the soh pier. A wallet found in
the pocket of a jacket b �.nged to Geddes. Police
immediately checked f miry, friends and
Geddes' employer befk f they began dragging
operations at 9 a.m. in sear of the body.
For more than nine '.fours, two Canadian Coast
Guard boats, three tug boats and a host of volunteers
searched the turbulentwaters around the south pier.

Goderich' Police Chief Pat King said Ontario
Provincial -Police divers were called in Monday
morning but their efforts were fruitless in the wind-
whipped waters. Following the recovery, the body
was taken to Alexandra Marine and General Hospital
and later transferred to Stratford where an autopsy
was performed. .
Chief King said Geddes was last seen at 8 p.m.
Sunday when he left the house of a friend. Police are
trying to trace his movements after that time and are
asking anyone who may have seen Geddes after 8
p.m. Sunday to contact the Goderich Police Depar-
tment.

Police chief King said the recovery of the body was
made possible through the assistance of several
volunteers including local firemen, members of the
coast guard, Sam Argyle and Donald Bert MacAdam
who loaned police the use of three tug boats.

as progressive authority

Dave Gower, he was particularly complimentary of
the work done by the MVCA and offered encouraging

"He was impressed with the authority and its_at-
titude towards conservation and erosion and also the
co-operation the authority, ,receives from the public
and participating municipalities," Gower said. "He
said the MVCA is a model authority inthe province,
used as an example for others." "

specifically wanted Pope to view, the cramped MVCA,,
headquarters in Wroxeter..
- "We wanted hiin to also get a -Brat -hand look at our
cramped and outdated headquarters," Gower said"
"We want some expansion at headquarters and it was
a good opportunity to show him the need."
Pope also managed a 20 -minute stop in Goderich
where he was briefed on the town's waterfront
development master -plan -comm asioner of works: - -
Ken Hunter. Hunter said the minister was impressed
that the town was.doing something active witli regard
to planning, development and bank stabilization.
He was also impressed with an aerial view of
Optimist Riverside Park after viewing pictures of the
former dump site.
The minister toured the Saugeen Valley watershed
area Tuesday morning and made several stops in the
Maitland.Valley watershed area in the afternoon.

82 teams
participate in
fastball - tourney
This weekend the town of Goderich will play host to
hundreds of fastball players as the Goderich
Industrial Fastball League presents its 14th annual
tournament over four days.
The tournament features 32 teams in two divisions,
competing for $3,140 in total prize money as well as
individual awards.
The tournament begins Friday, September 3 at 7.30
p.m. at Agriculture Park and opening ceremonies
will preceed the game between Goderich hayter's and
Zurich. The A division will also get underway Friday
evening with' a 9 p.m. game between defending
champion Wingham and Arva.
Tournament games will continue on two diamonds
all day Saturday and Sunday leading to the semi-final
and championship games in both divisions Monday.
There will also be a free dance in the arena both
Friday and Saturday evening.

Auburn woman
killed in car
accident Sunday
Two separate car accidents. on the weekend
claimed the life an Auburn area woman and sent two
men andthree youths to hospital. . .
Yvonne Marie Haggitt, 24, of R.R. 1 Auburn was
killed and two 'men seriously hurt in the head-on
crash of two cars on Huron County Road 25 about 12
kilometres north-east of Goderich early Sunday.
Goderich OPP say Haggitt was alone in her car
when it crashed about 5 a.m.
The driver of the second car, Rolland Hopkins, 26,
of Blyth; was taken to University Hospital in London
where he is in stable condition. A passenger in his
car, Brian White, 27, of Vanastra Was taken to Vic-
toria Hospital in London where he is in fair condition.
.On. Saturday -about. -9 -p.m. _a. single car accident On
County Road 18 near Holmesville sent three youths to
Alexandra Marine and General Hospital where they
were later transferred to London.
Driver of the car, Ralph Johnston, `17, of R.R.. 2
Goderich was northbound when he lost control after
swerving to miss a car he thought was crossing in'
front of him. His car went. off the road, skidded intim
grass and hit a tree, receiving: $3,000 damage. His.
passengers were Scott Bell, 18, also of - R.R. 2
Goderich and Martin Tevrink, 17, of Clinton.

Getting a lift
The Canadian Coast Guard Cutter 126, based in
Goderich, took part in simulated rescue exercises
with a Department of National Defence helicopter on
Lake Huron near Goderich last Thursday. Pictures of
the rescue operations appear inside the first section.
Back to school
Next week, hundreds of Goderich and area school
children will be returning to school, ending two
months of carefree vacation. Not all kids are excited
about the prospect of returning to the books as
reporter Terry. Marr discovered in several in-
terviews.- The ..kids' side :of the story appears in. the
first section.
Sports action
There was plenty of action on the sporting scene in
'Goderich the past week including two golf tour-
naments, baseball playoffs and the annual Goderich
Pro -Am Cycling Race which attracted 150 entries
