wins 505 regatta
Sally Lindsey, one of the world's leading'
female 505 sailors, and her crew of Stan
Honey, both from California, won the
Canadian 505 Championship Sailing
Regatta held in Goderich from Saturday to
Monday. The first place Canadians and
second overall were Simon Lewis and his
brother Nick from Toronto.
Two races were held Saturday but
Sunday's races had to be cancelled
because the water was too rough for
rescue boats. The event was wrapped up
on Monday with the final three races.
A 505 is a two-man 5.05 metre long centre
board dinghy, one of the world's fastest
sailing dinghies. This is the third time
Goderich has hosted a 505 regatta and par-
ticipants are unanimous in their praise of
Goderich as the best sailing. port in the
Great Lakes and even in North America.
Despite the weather conditions Sunday,
this year's participants all agreed that the
regatta was very endurable and will likely
request another here for next year.
There were 29 entries in all. Organizers
had hoped for 40 and say the number of
entries could be a reflection on the
economy as there were fewer Canadian
dingys than American. Ethan Bixby of
Boston, the current world's champion, was
in attendance but only placed fifth overall.
Two past Canadian champions from New
Brunswick also attended and there were
others from California, Chicago, Alberta
and all points of Ontario.
Most of the sailors who participated in
the Goderich race will now go to Kingston
next weekend for the North American
Championships. The winners from there
will go to the World Championships in
Adelaide, Australia in March 1983.

Goderich United A team
regains its winning form
Goderich United A team regained its
winning form on Sunday with a convincing
victory over Calabria of London by a score
of 3-1. United should have pumped in more
goals if it had not been for' outstanding
saves by the opposing goalkeeper.
The first 20 minutes belonged to United
as they continuously pressured Calabria's
defence. However, Calabria escaped
without being scored upon.
The tides turned in Calabria's favor mid-
way through the first-half and the result
was their only goal of the game:With
United.in a must -win situation: the players
became even more determined to get on
the scoreboard. With one minute
remaining in the first half, Randy Little
picked up a loose ball in front of the net and
blasted a perfect shot to the top left corner,
leaving the goalkeeper no chance for a
play..
• ° In the second half, United's defencpd
half -backs almost completely shut down
Calabria's offensive power. Hustle and
determination for United soon began to
take its toll on the Calabria team. Mid -way
through the second half, United scored the
winning goal. Dennis. Donnelly was sent
down his left-wing position and volleyed a
cross into the midfield and Bruce "Melick
rushed in and headedthe ball into the right
corner.
United finished scoring. when Rolf
Gottschalk" volley was- deflected by
Randy Litt 's head onto the Vol of John
Elliot. John advanced on the goalkeeper
and made a quick move and put the ball by
the defenceless keeper.
United displayed a total team effort in
recording its sixth -victory -of the -sea son -.4n- -
the past few games United or sputtitt'gthe
'ball into the air too much: However, on
Sunday United kept the ball on the playing
surface with .short quick passes and the
results prdved to be much more favorable.
United's record now stands at six wins,
two losses and two ties which enables them
to hold onto second place.
The next game is in Stratford on Sunday,
August 29 at 5 p.m. Thi is an extremely
important game because Stratford is a
very good team and are right behind
United in the'standiings.
