EXETER • At least two
investment groups have
indicated some interest in
purchasing the assets of
Hughes Columbia Inc., as a
total package with a view to
keeping the Huron Park
boating building firm in
operation:
The business went into
receivership on June 8,
putting about 80 area
residents out of work. .
Twenty-two of those em-
ployees were re -hired by the
receiver to complete work on
boats in progress.
Tenders were recently
called for the firm's assets
but a representative from
the receivers said it was too
early for the firms interested
in the entire package to
present bids.

old town bridge
will be replaced
ST. MARYS - One of o
town's oldest stone bridges
will be coming down and a
replacement will be con-
structed over the Thames
River.
St. Marys council voted to
demolish Victoria Bridge,
however a new structure will
not be able to accommodate
traffic until April, 1983.
Engineer Ken Dunn of
B.M. Ross and Associates of
Goderich strongly recom-
mended to council that a new
bridge shouldn't be opened to
traffic until mid-April
because salt action on the
"green" concrete deck
would jeopardize the project.
Mayor Dick MacPherson

who w aJ auacul, at the
decision making meeting
later said, "It's unbelievable
that the engineer and a
group of councillors would
decide to inconvenience the
public to that extent.'
Mayor MacPherson
conceded that town solicitor
Mike Mitchell had advised.
council to call tenders for the
job, but he noted that council
had made its decision to call
tenders based on a con-
struction period of about
three or four months.
"The question'is, he said,
"Would council have voted to
call tenders if council knew
the bridge would be closed
for an additional three
months?"
