ceremonies for Welland Canal

• On August 6, 1932, the
current Welland Canal was
officially opened. This was
• the fourth such canal which,
since 1829, allowed ships to
pass between Lake Erie and
Lake Ontario
The present canal consists
of eight locks and stretches
close to 27 miles from Port
-Weller --to- -Port- • Colborne.
Vessels up to .222.50 metres
(730feet) long may. transit
tCISsotto -
the system.
Actually vessels had been
using the fourth canal since
late in 1930. Gradually,,
longer and longer ships were
allowed down from the upper
lakes to test the system.
Finally the Lemoyne, largest
ship on the lakes, was called
to participate in the opening
ceremonies. Many,
dignataries _assembled for
the event and scores of
onlookers observed the giant ••

What became of Lemoyne,
toast of the inland seas not
all that long ago?
The. ship was built at •
Midland and when she was
launched on June 23, 1926,
her name was listed as
Glenmhor. By the time of her
maiden voyage on August 19
of that year, her name had
become_Glenniohr. She
loaded a lakes -dr
15,415 tons of coal for this
• first trip. .Many records
followed.
Glenmohr was built for
Playfair's Glen Line but
when she entered ,service,
• the fleet had been sold to.
Canada Steamship Lines.
They soon renamed her
Lemoyne.
Lemoyne was. 633 feet
(1-92.94 metres) long in
oierall length. She had a
beam of 70 feet (21.33
metres), the first lake Ahip
with that ;Width.. Tonnage
was registered •at...,10,480
gross and 9, -Wind. Capacity
was in the 14,500 ton dead-
weight range.
Lemoyne was. powered by
a triple expansion engine
