It was eight years ago, as a three year old, that Derbys -Gent covered this half mile oval in 201.2. That record still stands. The eleven year old gelding now has earnings over $350,000 and had a personal best of 158. Last year he wen •in Detroit in 158.3 and had won this spring at Windsor Raceway. He has a lifetime total of 56 wins. Derbys Gent's last visit to Goderich was in the 1979 Ron Peagan Invitation Race when he was fourth behind Kintore Lady, Fossil Ridge and Southgate Pride. Vanstone Clinton teams win By Eleanor Bradnock The Auburn fastball tournament was a decided success last weekend when the Clinton Housewives wen the A cham- pionship over Goderich Elevators. A thrilling game right to the end with no runs scored until the end of the fifth inning. Robert Craig of llderton made the presentation of the cup donated in memory of his father, the late William J. Craig (Baseball Bill), the runner-ups were presented with the trophy by Bill Sproul. Ceramic beer steins were given and thh, Goderich Elevators received trays. The B championstup was won By the Clinton Sluggers and they received their trophy from Joe Dunsmore, sales representative for Molson's. The B win- ners received glass mugs. This game started at 7:30 Sunday evening and a large crowd was present. The tournament started on Thursday evening when Lutirnow lost to Blyth. Blyth 14 - Lucknow 0, also West Wawanosh beat Belgrave 4 to 3. On Friday evening the Clinton Sluggers lost 9 to 10 against Summerhill. Goderich Elevators won 12 to 0 from Benmiller. Bennett Team continues win streak The Goderich Squirt soccer travel team continued it unbeaten season on Friday, July 16 with a 7-0 home win over St. Colum - ban. in a one-sided contest, inside- forwards Chad Papple and Todd Papple scored three goals each and centre - forward Jamie Stanley added a single. In Squirt house league action on Wednesday, July 14 the Raiders shut out the Vikings 2-0, with goals coming from Jeff Kent and Jeff Phelan. In the second game, the Bombers beat the Vikings 4-2. Chad Papple tallied four times for the . winners, while Jamie Stanley and Jason Duck- worth scored for Vikings. Last Wednesday, the Bombers defeated the Raiders 3-1; and then lost to the Vikings 1-0 in the second game. Todd Papple scored three times against the Raiders, with Jeff Phelan replying for the losers. Jamie Stanley scored for the Vikings in the second game.
