Forbes, the most famous portrait painter in North America. Forbes, 'who won the international Proctor prize twice (equivalent to the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes), painted portraits of three Canadian Prime • Ministers, the one of John Diefenbaker being the most fanr to Canadians. Leeper spent the next few years painting in New York City and San Francisco. He is a member of the Portrait Club of New York, the only Canadian artist who is included. Leeper explains that there are two types of portrait painters. The commercial odes can be found at places like the CNE turning out portraits and sketches of people by the hundreds. When Leeper painted, the portrait of Archbishop Pocock (which now hangs in St. Michael's Cathedral, Toronto), he required him to sit through 20 sessions of about 31 hours each. He required Archbishop Wilhelm to sit for less time and attributes this to the fact that "I must be getting better". He explains that if you manage to get a good likeness of the head and hands, you can save busy clients a great deal of time by filling in the rest of the composition at home. The most important thing is to capture character and personality from the sittings. There is a fixed demand for good portrait artists. Bank directory want portraits for corporate boar- drooms. In the U.S. military, a portrait is a tradition above a certain rank., The emphasis is on craft- smanship and Leeper explains that there is a big .difference between a portrait of a person and a photograph of a person. "A photograph is a split second in time. A painting grows. There are at least 58 half tones that the camera misses. Mr. Forbes used to put it this way: The camera has one eye, no brain and no soul." Leeper imports his canvas and all his paints from London, England. His paints are made by Windsor and Newton Ltd whose business dates back to the 1700s. These paints are reputed to have the most permanent pigments in the world. • Recently, -Ivens. Film Productions - of Toronto completed a film on Leeper- and five other artists.
