As of May 3, both the
Goderich and Exeter Canada
Employment Centres for
Students have been open for
business.
Joni Thompson has been
hired again this year for the"
position of .Student
Placement Officer in
Goderich. Joni is a native of
Goderich and has just
completed her degree in
physical education at the
University of Western
Ontario. She plans to attend
teachers' college next year.
For the summer, she will be
helping students find jobs out
of the Goderich office
located above the post office
on 35 East Street.
Kathy Caldwell of Seaforth
will . be the Student
Placement Officer for* the
ExeTer office on 305 Main
Street. Kathy will be
finishing her degree . in
English. andhistory next
year at Western and then
plans to attend law school.
Both Joni andKatlwill
be supervised .by Jim
Thorne. Jim, who works out
of the Goderich office, will be
soliciting employers for job
vacancies for students this
summer along with.
arranging publicity, ad-
vertising and ,promotion -for
the Hire -A -Student cam-
paign and compiling
'statistics on employment
activity.
Joni and Kathy , will be
taking job orders from
employers and registrations
from students, selecting and
referring students to em-
ployers and giving out job -
hunting tips as well 'as
disseminating information
on government programs
available to students and
employers alike. They will
also assist in compiling
statistics and visiting em-
ployers.
Compared to April 1981,
statistics show an increase of
94 per cent in numbers of
students placed in jobs and
an increase of 51 per cent in
the number of job openings
available to students.
Although these figures in-
dicate only employment
activity conducted through
the Student Employment
Centre, and therefore not in
the economy in general, such
increases are very en-
couraging considering that
1982 promises to be quite a
tough year for student job-
seekers.
Students are urged to
register as soon as possible
with the Employment Centre
in their area.
Employers are en-
couraged to call the Student
Employment Centre if they
need a student for a couple of
hours, days or for the whole
summer. The Centre has
many students who are
ready, willing and more than
able to do --just--- about
anything.
Hospital auxiliary
makes donations
Patients at Alexandra'
Marine and General Hospital
can now enjoy hairdressing
and barbering services for a
minimal fee thanks to the
hospital auxiliary.
A room on the ground floor
of the hospital, formerly
used as an ambulance office,
has been transformed into a
hairdressing shop and is now
in service. The maintenance
department at the hospital
did the renovations and the
auxiliary paid -for these
renovations as well as
buying supplies for the new
facility. Auxiliary pr®sident
Janet Kalbfleisch esti:,ates
that it cost a bit over $1,000 in
total. Any money made from
the will be put back into
aux ary work.
Job saved
Approval of a work -
sharing agreement that will
keep one Goderich-area
worker on the job was an-
nounced recently by
Agriculture Minister Eugene
Whelan on behalf of Employ-
ment and Immigration
Minister Lloyd Axworthy.
Prior to the agreement,
the company - South End
Body (Goderich) Ltd. - was
in the position of having to
layoff this employee for
eight weeks.
The agreement, part of a
program now budgeted at
$90 million, will see three of
the company's employees
voluntarily moving to a four-
day work week for a 13 -week
period. Each week these
workers willreceive one day
of Unemployment Insurance
benefits to "top up" their
reduced wages.
The chief benefit of the
work -sharing program to the
company is that it will allow
South End Body to keep its
work -force intact and at a
sufficiently high skill level to
meet the demands when hill
production resumes.
From the employees'
point -of -view, the major con-
sideration is that they will be
spared the uncertainties and
hardships of total unemploy-
rpent. They will even be able
to maintain their fringe
benefits throughout the
period. ,
To. date, 217 agreements
-involving 15,710, employees
in work sharing, and preven-
ting the lay-off of 6,264
workers have- been -approved_
in Ontario.

Recently the- hospital

(electric or battery
operated) and crash cart for
the emergency department.
The hospital board actually
purchased the station for
more than $6,000 and the
auxiliary has been raising
money to pay for it ever
since. So far, more than half
the amount needed has been
raised.
