Goderich Township Women's Institute hold 10th
The Goderich Township
Women's Institute (W.I.)
held their 10th birthday
party in the Community
Centre in Holmesville last
Thursday afternoon with
some 80 attending. The table
was nicely decorated with
spring flowers, candles and
birthday cake.
Molly Cox was at the piano
with members singing the
Ode and Alice Porter had
everyone go about shaking
hands, making a real
friendly gesture.
Mrs. Driver played a few
numbers on her viobi with
Molly Cox at the piano. Irene
Cudmore gave a•reading and
Berniece Mcllwain gave
three readings.
Everyone then enjoyed
court whist with 18 tables
playing. Winners were
Emma Cox and Helen
Lindsay. The birthday prize
was won by Doris Batkin of
Clinton. Door prizes were
won by Lorna Radford, Mrs.
Wright, Elizabeth Sitter,
Stella McPhee. Alice Porter
thanked everyone for
coming on such a special day
for Goderich Township W.I.
Groups attending and giving
their good wishes were from
St. Helens, Auburn,
Wingham, Belgrave,
Maitland, Blyth, Lon-
desboro, Clinton, Dungan-
non, Goderich, Tiger Dunlop.

spent Sunday with their
daughter Shirley Norman.
In Holmesville United
Church last Sunday the
ladies choir sang the an-
them. Rev. Betchel showed
the Sunday school children

Stratford while the London
Conference is meeting there
in May. The minister's
sermon was promise of
Victory. Bill Crawford and
Del Schlendorf collected the

Softball
Softball registration for
Goderich Township is being

Saturday, May 8 at the
Community Centre from 10
till 12 p.m.
The fee this year is $3 for
eight years old and younger;
$8 for nine and up and a
family rate of $20. has been
set. The age groupings

for both boys and girls.
Juniors are 17 and 18 year
old. Midgets are 15 and 16
year olds. 13 and 14 are
bantams. Pee Wee are 11 and
12 year olds. Squirts are 9
and 10 years old. Eight years
old and youngerr are tykes
and the youngest of these
play T -ball: TQ be eligible for
registration for T -ball a child
must turn six years old
before December 31, 1982.
Anyone who is interested
in coaching this summer is
invited to a meeting at the
Community Centre on
Monday, May 10 at 8:30 p.m.
School news
The pupils from Grades 7
and 8 at Holmesville Public
School had their own science
fair on March 31,st and April
lst. The winners were:
Jenny Allen and. Kim
Bruinsma, Magnets & Air;
Julia Feltham, The Ger-
mination of a Bean Seed;
Angela Orr, Solar Heating;
Lisa DePutter and Julia
Ritchie, Properties of Air;
Norman, Mould; Shana
Hutchings and Jennifer
Bacon, Smoking.
These contestants went on
to the West Regional Science
Fair held at Robertson
Public School . on April 5th
and 6th and competed
against other schools in the
Goderich area. The winners
from Holmesville were:
Heather Harris and Tracy
Norman, 2nd; Shane Hut•
chings and Jennifer Bacon,
3rd4)Jenny Allen and Kim
Bruinsma, 3rd; Julia
Feltham, lst.
The 1st and 2nd place
winters then went on to the
County Wide Science Fair
held at Huron Centennial
Public School in Brucefield..
Holmesville did not place
any winners at this- event,
but contestants did very well
considering the fact that this
was the first year the
students participated in this
event.
CONGRATULATIONS to all
the Grade 7 and 8 pupils who
took part in this science fair.
The Grade 5 class would
like to thank parents and
students for making their
white elephant sale and bake
sale such a success. They
raised $38.88 towards their
trip.
The Grade 4 class has just
completed a unit on the ram
forest. The students worked
on topics in groups and
presented. them in in -

work. They are now
beginning a unit on 'Water
Animals'.
The Grade 3 class has just
completed a unit on
'Weather'. Following their
trip to the circus today, they
will return ,and do a unit on
'Circus'. They can use their
newly acquired knowledge to
aid them in this unit.
Bears, Bears, Bears! Mrs.
Heslinga's Grade 2 class is
busy learning about types of
bears, their habits and fun
bear activities. In Math they
are studying time. Parents
are encouraged to ask their
children to read their clocks
at home.

about Japan and both Grade
2 classes will be visiting the
London Regional Children's
Museum and MacDonalds on
May 7th.
Mrs. Heslinga's Grade 2's
are also starting a new
program called 'Thinking
Thursdays', where parents
and people from the com-
munity come into their
classroom and do workshops
in small groups. Thank you
to those who have helped and
if you have a talent or know
of -someone who does, please
contact Mrs. Heslinga so
that we can have continued
success in this program.
During April, Mrs. Lock-
wood's Grade 2 class is
studying fractions, and
reviewing addition and
subtraction math facts.
Since Spring has arrived
they will be studying spring
weather, frogs, fish and
plant life. They are growing
vegetables and flowers for
theirspring gardens.
Everyone is looking forward
to the Grade 2 trip to the
London Children's Museum
on May 7th. A late lunch is
provided, so they will only
need a small snack.

held at the home of Mrs.
Scott. At this meeting the
girls judged each other on
their 100 percent whole
wheat bread. They also
learned how to make
hamburger and hot dog buns
and fancy rolls with jam
filling.
After the business part of
the meeting was over, the
rest of the evening was spent
planning for the meeting 6
party. The party was held at
Mrs. Van Osch's .home.
Parents, sisters and friends
were guests at this party. A
good time was had by all
playing games which some
of the girls had prepared.
Punch was served along with
all kinds of different bread
which the girls made for the
party.
