IODE celebrates patriation
Members of the Maple
Leaf chapter of the IODE
gathered to celebrate the
patriation of the Canadian
constitution Saturday, April
17 at the home of Mrs. Marie
Hughes:
Mrs. G.L. Royal,
Provincial standard bearer
for the Maple Leaf chapter
addressed -the- group --on. -the-
historic occasion.
"We are meeting , here
today to join in celebrating
the proclamation
ceremonies; the con-.
stitittional sign -over, the
Canada Act.
It is a time of reflection on
the Meaning of citizenship.
Let us remember that
citizenship is a privilege that
brings responsibility.
Citizenship is not
everywhere in the world a
right, as"we take for granted
in Canada. Each person who
becomes a Canadian citizen-
takes
it yen -takes the following oath.
"I swear that I will be
faithful and bear true
allegiance to Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth I1, Queen of
Canada, her heirs and
successors according to law
and that I . will faithfully
observe the laws of Canada
and fulfill my duties as a
Canadian citizen."
Naturally we all know that
oath applies „to Canadian
born citizens Mrs. Royal
said.
-T rerefare- we- are
especially happy and proud
to have Her Majesty, Queen
Elizabeth II, Queen of
Canada, on our soil to be part
of these historical
ceremonies.
"Today is a beginning; a
new start for our nation.
Confederation was born , in
difficulty and has weathered
well. Our fresh start today,
-born in difficulty, too, will
weather any adversity if we
approach it with dignity,
patience and tolerance.
"I -..ask -you as_membe rrs_-o£._
the IODE, as patriotic
citizens. of our beloved land,
Canada, to rise and toast this
day, the proclamation
ceremonies of the Canada
Act."
Wawanosh residents should look .
• from page 4
the plan does not permit it.
Quote - "farming is away
of life in East Wawanosh. In
Planning Workshop pro-
gram desire to continue way
of life expressed strongly
and positively."
Comment - True - but no
desire was expressed to be
ordered, permitted, allowed
to do it in the manner in
which someone else dictates.
Quote - "clearing will not
be allowed" - • "drainage
shall be discouraged" - per-
manent structures of any
type will not be permitted"
Comment - There are
those phrases again telling
us we cannot do it. It really
doesn't seem to matter to
these planners of our future
as East Wawanosh township
residents. The farmer is hav-
ing a rough enough time try- :.
Mg to make ends meet and
might need to drain land or
clear an area .to augment his
income. Why should they
care? They pick up their pay
cheques regularly and if the
farmer can't exist - so what
he was getting too fat and
prosperous anyway.
Quote - "areas of privately
owned natural environment
will remain part of larger
farm holding"
Comment Aren't they
nice? They allow tis to keep
our own' land.
Quote - "Plan shall be im-
plemented through the local
municipal capital works pro-
gram"
Comment - In other words
they secure their jobs and
their pay cheques if the plan
goes through.
Quote - "land affected may
revert to a use in conformity
with the intent of the Official
Plan ,
Comment - Here again - we
will be told what to do:
Quote - "participation of
general public deemed
crucial"
Comment - Very easily
said, but they listen and go
ahead with the plan anyway.
It doesn't seem to matter
what people say unless they
are saying what the planning
board wishes to hear.
Quote - "E.W. Council may
pass by laws" - re:
cleanliness buildings, main-
taining yards, buildings,
fences, etc.
Comment -• Just another
example how this will affect
each and every resident of
East Wawanosh Township.
•
WELCOME
NOME
This plan is just asking your
permission to give them the
authority to govern your
lives and .the lives ;of our
,children and ,.grandchildren
should they live in East
Wawanosh Township. I'll
give this plan credit in one
area. . Auburn, Belgrave;
Whitechurch and Hutton
Heights are being allowed to,
Quote - "develop in their
own styleand to the satisfac-
tion of their -residents".
Comment - It is
understandable Why this is
done. Add the total residents
of these 4 hamlets; then total
the farmers affected by this
plan and guess what the vote
for the plan would be? You
guessed it. The motion for
the plan .goes through
because when one is not
directly affected, there is a
tendency to say, "That's the
other guy's problem, . not
Mine," but it could be one of
your future generation's pro-
blems.
Hopefully everyone in
East Wawanosh. Township
will read this draft and
notice all the things we will
no longer have control of
(e.g. our lives and our future
and our children's future as
DEE-
BEE
residents here), if it is.pass-
ed and becomes a law. I plan
to attend the meeting on May
6 and sincerely hope every
tax payer of East Wawanosh
does too.

Wawanosh Resident
