Jazz Choir to compete in All -Canadian Festival
This past Saturday, the
G.D.C.I. Jazz Choir, under
the direction of Mrs. Eleanor
Robinson, competed in the
Western Ontario Stage Band
Festival and won the vocal
jazz category. More im-
portantly, however, by
achieving a mark of 90
percent, they qualified to
compete in the All -Canadian
Stage Band Festival to be
held . at Hamilton Place the
week of May 11 to 15.
The two adjudicators, one
of whom is the Vice -
Chairman of the National
Adjudication Committee,
were enthusiastic in their
praise. They were especially
pleased with the soloists arid
the -selection of `eheet e
(arrangements). One ad-
judicator commented to the
audience. "If you had the
chance, as we have, to
examine these charts, you
would see that these are
extremely difficult". The
soloists were described as
'fabulous' and "if I'd closed
my eyes, I would have
thought it was a (record".
The jazz choir had to sing
three songs from each of
three categories: swing,
ballad and contemporary
jazz.
The swing piece was a
Count Basie style
arrangement of "Zip Ah Dee
Doo Dah". ,The jazz choir
was praised foe, its attention
to the tricky time and Kevin
Huyck was commended for
his 'scat' solo (a free im-
eno is tion n ter. l the basic
melody line). Another
comment was made about
the liveliness of expression
and movement. As one
adjudicator noted: "You
really give the impression of
having fun singing".
Theballad was a seven
part unaccompanied
arrangement of "Yesterday'
featuring Darryl Wilson.
Again Darryl was applauded
for his handling of the solo.
The choir was praised for its
sustaining of the complex
harmonies while main-
taining an excellent balance.
Andrea Jackson added a
second, haunting harmony
line and was congratulated
for the,sensitivity of balance.
The total effect was
described by one adjudicator
as "breathtaking" and by
the other as "gorgeous".
The final. selection was
"Birdland", a contemporary
jazz piece recorded by
Manhattan Transfer. This
number featured Mona
Gleason as the main soloist
plus Kevin Huyck, Andrea
Jackson, Greg Wilson, Wes
Gautcher and Heather Ann
Stapleton. Mona, according
to the adjudicators, "nailed
us to the wall" and was
complimented for her jazz
'feel' and fine sense of rhyth-
m. Wes was given a 'gold
star' rating and the other
soloists were commended for
their balance and ,rhythmic
attacks.
In addition to those
already mentioned, the jazz
choir consists of Ann Dun-
can, Christine Stapleton,
Cathy DeBolt, Linda
Gleason, Dr madden,
Teresa Cannon and Kiin
Langlois.
Drawing special praise
Marj Moore, representing the Bluewater 5 -pin Bolding
Association, presents a cheque for $200 to students of Queen
Elizabeth School in Goderich. Receiving the cheque is
(front row from left) Karen Woodall, Sandy Mathieson,
Judy Horne, ( middle row) Annette Tolsma, Linda Reid and
senior classroom teacher A4idrey Barlow. (back row) Gary
Gross and Darcy Doak.

was the fine combo con-
sisting of Kim Ladd - bass
guitar, Shawn Rahbek -
guitar, Karen Hyde - electric
piano, and Paul Ormandy -
combo leader and per-
cussion. They were com-
mended for the support of
the choir, keeping the rhyth-
ms going while maintaining
a sensitive balance.
Although the combo is not
actually marked, their ex-
cellent performance made
possible the high marks of
the jazz choir.
The jazz. choir has three
weeks to work on special
areas - such as increasing
the dynamic range but as the
one adjudicator summed it
up: "These aresmall. things.
You have a tat .,ic -chat,
with lots of energy and
talent. You deserve to be in
the National Finals".
