The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-04-21, Page 3Separate Schooloard approves school calendar By Stephanie Levesque DUBLIN - The 1982-83 School calendar -and profes- sional development. days have been approved bylhe Huron -Perth Separate School Board. Approved at the April 13 STAG for Scott MacEwen SAT., APR, 24TH 9:00 P.M. 524-7913 for Information PROCLAMATION That in recognition of the valuable work done by Volunteers in all fields, the Town of Goderich proclaims the week of April 18th -24th as "NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK" in the Town of Goderich meeting, were the 1983 mid- winter break, to run from March 21 to 26 inclusive. The Ministry of Education allows each board to determine its own mid -winter break dates. Trustee Jeannette Eybergen said a special pro- vincial review by the Ministry acknowledged the concern of the separate " school supporters who want their children in school the week preceeding Easter,, referred to as Holy Week. There has been some talk though that the Ministry may have the mid -winter break and Holy Week coin- cide. • A letter to Trustee Ron Marcy from Rev. J.M. Williams of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Stratford also expresses. concern about the mid -winter break dates. "At a meeting of the Bishops' Senate on Tuesday, it was brough to my atten- tion that the Ontario Govern- ment is giving serious con- sideration to the idea of establishing the Spring Break to always coincide with Easter and Holy Week. Many school boards have already formally protested such a move because of the great disruption and exodus of people from their parishes during this most Sacred Season of- the church year. The Ontario Bishops will also make a formal presen- tation . outlining their dissatisfaction with such a decision," said Father Williams' letter. Trustee Marcy said` ap- proving the 1983 mid -winter break from march 21 to 26 will satisfy Father Williams' concern. Trustee Ernie Vanderschott asked if the motion is only for one year, and Trustee Marcy said the board submits its school year calendar on a. yearly basis to the Ministry. He ask- ed what comes after 1983. - "One way to solve the 'd - winter break problem ' to cut it out altoge r ". said •Trustee Rpn Murray. • Nine professional develop- ment days were approved by ' the board for 1982-83, with five days corresponding to the Perth and Huron County Boards of Education.
