these days thanks to volunteer Dave Munn
and his`electrie razor.
Ivor the past three months, Mr. Munn
has been going to Maitland Manor seven
mornings a week to shave 13 male
residents there. Ile has become a bright
spot in heir lives, explains activity
director, Rita Tobey.
"It's More than just shaving. He is
'someone consistent wham they recognize
and can lolik forward to seeing each day,"
she says.
Shaving, theresidents is good for Mr.
Munn too.. He is on a full disability pension
with a bad back that does not allow him to
work.
"Coming here (to Maitland Manor)
every day helps me to keep my mind off
my back. All the men seem to enjoy it too.
Every morning they are watching for me.
1 was away for a week recently because I
was sick and when I came back, they were
all asking about me and were glad to see
me," he says. "The nurses are so darn
busy, I feel lice I'm helping them out too."
Mr. Munn is not a barber (although he
might have missed his --calling!). He first
got the idea of shaving people a few years
ago when h;sfather-in-law was
hospitalized at Alexandra Marine and
General. He used to go to the hospital
every day to visit with him, feed him and
shave him.
After his father-in-law died, Mr. Munn

got the hospital's ' permission to carry on
visiting other sick people and rendering
them the same services. At one time, he
was helping to feed people at the hospital
three times a day. When, that became too
much, he began concentrating on shaving
the men who could not shave themselves.
He has, been doing this voluntarily for the
past two years, seven mornings a week.
Then, about three months ago Mr. Munn
learned that one of the patients he had
been shaving at the hospital, was being
moved to Maitland Manor. •
"He told me he was really going to miss
me and that's when I got the idea to start
shaving the men' at Maitland Manor,"
explains Mr. Munn.
Between the ,hospital, Maitland Manor
and several shut-ins, Mr. Munn sometimes
shaves up to 30 men per morning. He does.
so, courtesy of Legion Branch 109 of which
he is a member. The Branch recently
bought him two new rechargeable electric
cordless razors to use on his visits. •
It's refreshing to watch Mr. Munn
walking up and down the corridors at
Maitland Manor, going from room to
room, razor in hand, greeting all the men
by name.
• "We visit and become friends. Some of
these guys tell me some pretty good
jokes," he laughs.
Since Mr. Munn has become a regular at
Maitland Manor, almost everybody is
smiling.
"We are always looking for volunteers
like Mr. Munn," says Mrs. Tobey.
