The me Friday was the- first hefirst in a best of three Huron - Perth championship final series. Northwestern was undefeated in the regular schedule with a 10 0, won- lost record. Coach Lynn Meyer's Goderich team was second, losing only once, by six pointa to Northweater, in Stratford. But here Friday Goderlch was an obviously superior team. The Viking defence paralysed the normally.. potent Stratford offence, Every time Northwestern tried to move the ball down the floor they looked up only to find a Goderlch player on top of them. The Vikings led 20 - 12 at halftime and their intense defensive play held a frustrated Stratford squad to only three points in the third quarter. Coach Meyers' attitude toward the game was ob- vloualy mirrored by the play of hie team. "Stratford may have regarded our victory as an upset, but we sure didn't. We were ready for that game," said Meyers. Game two of .the best -of - three series was played Tuesday in Stratford, with the third game, if necessary, set *for today (Wednesday), also in the Classic City. Allison Graham; whose aggressive play inspired the Viking, victory, led all scorers with 13 points Friday. Anne Allan and Cathy Oke had six points each for Goderich. Kim Fritzley and Mary Beth Alexander had four each and Nancy Bugler hod twopolnta for the Winners. Vi Dretrd led the Nor- thwestern attack with eight points. The Vikings earned their way into tennis with a 53 - 44 victory over Stratford Central in sudden death semi-final play here last Tuesday. The disciplined defence which was so ef- fective against Nor- thwestern showed itself in this game too, The Vikings used an effective press and stayed away from cheap fouls. BY TD The GDCI senior girls' basketball team was eliminated in Huron -Perth Conference semi-final play last Tuesday, losing 38 -19 to Exeter South Huron in sudden -death action in Exeter. Exeter had finished first in the regular schedule, undefeated in ten games. The Vikings were fourth with a 7.3 record. The Vikings had a good first half in Exeter, staying even with the home team until a three point play in the last minute allowed Exeter to pull ahead, 18 -13. Exeter,maintained their momentum in the second half, controlling the boards and keeping the Vikings fram penetrating their strong defence. Mary O'Neill had a strong game for Goderich, scoring 11 points. Tracey MacEwan had four while Sonja Lapaine and Andrea DeWinter added two apiece, Maja Gans, with 11 and Deb Taylor, with 10, led the Exeter attack. Despite being eliminated in the playoffs, coach John Geiger's Vikings played an exhibition ±, game Friday in London and took part in a tournament Saturday in 'Veaforth. Friday, the Vikings defeated Medway 42 - 22 in a good team effort, featuring good percentage shooting by Andrea DeWinter, Mona Gleason and Patti Botz. Gleason - had 10 points while Sonja Lapaine and DeWinter had eight apiece. Botz added six. _ Tracey MacEwan and Mary O'Neill had four apiece and Teresa Donnelly had two points. Jennifer Beretta had 10 for Medway. The Vikings played three games in Seaforth, edging Seaforth 28 - 27, and losing to London Central 41 - 17 and Medway 40 -38. Mary O'Neill sunk the free throw on a three point play in overtime to give the Vikings their victory over Seaforth. London Central went on from their win over the Vikings to take the tournament championship. The Medway win oyer Goderich we§their first in four games against the Vikings this season. Sonja lapaine topped the Viking scoring in the tournament with a total of 29 paints. Tracey MacEwan hada total of 11 points.
