`Underdogs' defeat Northwestern
BY ID
The overflow student
crowd watching the GDCI
junior girls basketball team
defeat Stratford Nor-
thwestern 37.29 here Friday
mist have wondered how the
Stratford team finished in
first place.
The me Friday was the-
first
hefirst in a best of three Huron -
Perth championship final
series. Northwestern was
undefeated in the regular
schedule with a 10 0, won-
lost record. Coach Lynn
Meyer's Goderich team was
second, losing only once, by
six pointa to Northweater,
in Stratford. But here Friday
Goderlch was an obviously
superior team.
The Viking defence
paralysed the normally..
potent Stratford offence,
Every time Northwestern
tried to move the ball down
the floor they looked up only
to find a Goderlch player on
top of them. The Vikings led
20 - 12 at halftime and their
intense defensive play held a
frustrated Stratford squad to
only three points in the third
quarter.
Coach Meyers' attitude
toward the game was ob-
vloualy mirrored by the play
of hie team. "Stratford may
have regarded our victory as
an upset, but we sure didn't.
We were ready for that
game," said Meyers.
Game two of .the best -of -
three series was played
Tuesday in Stratford, with
the third game, if necessary,
set *for today (Wednesday),
also in the Classic City.
Allison Graham; whose
aggressive play inspired the
Viking, victory, led all
scorers with 13 points
Friday. Anne Allan and
Cathy Oke had six points
each for Goderich. Kim
Fritzley and Mary Beth
Alexander had four each and
Nancy Bugler hod twopolnta
for the Winners.
Vi Dretrd led the Nor-
thwestern attack with eight
points.
The Vikings earned their
way into tennis with a 53 -
44 victory over Stratford
Central in sudden death
semi-final play here last
Tuesday. The disciplined
defence which was so ef-
fective against Nor-
thwestern showed itself in
this game too, The Vikings
used an effective press and
stayed away from cheap
fouls.
