The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-11-18, Page 5S;.fety standards at mine
need attention says nurse
Dear Editor,
It could have happened to
my brother! Steve Palmer
was my friend's brother !
And so—will this finally
produce a change in the
safety standards at the
mine? Will someone in the.
hierarchy listen to the
miners when they bargain
for more protective
measures?' Must they
bargain? Can it really wait
tar the next bargaining
session? Are preventative
measures really too costly?
What happened last week
was pretty shabby, wasn't
it;.' It would have cost
another salary for a "buddy
system"—high priced?
As past head nurse of the
Emergency Department at
Alexandra Marine and
General, I have seen the
resulting injuries and in-
dignities too many tunes. I
am bewildered and
somewhat embarrassed that
I have never come forth with
ETTERS
a
any sort of public utterance.
I could quickly condemn the
standards to friends,
acquaintances and co-
workers, but my opinions
would always be shelved
until the occurrence of the
next accident. Then, with all
the anger and zeal
irnaginable, ,the opinions and
feelings would spark anew,
only to be shelved again. I
speak of, safety. It was
always "safe" not to speak.
May I take this op-
poptunity to apologize to the
miners. I regret that I
postponed voicing my
disapproval of the safety
standards.
Some of the injured men
will not work again. People
will say, "Oh, it's too bad!"
or "Isn't it a shame?" It
truly is a disgrace and while
people, such as I, ignore the
inevitable, the inevitable will
continue to happen.
I don't feel like being "on
hold" any more.
To Walter and to Bruce
and to the men who I ac-
companied to London in
ambulances and to the men
whose names I have
forgotten—I hope this letter,
in same small way, will help
you to know that people
really do care.
To management and those
responsible for safety
standards--whut next! ! ?

MS unit needs interest
Dear Editor:
On Wednesday, November
25, the Huron County Unit of
the Multiple Sclerosis Socie-
ty will hold a general
meeting at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre.
The unit was formed only
Last. year, and while the in=
itial meeting was welt at-
tended, subsequent meetings
failed.to attract any interest.
The Huron County Unit is
struggling. It has been kept
alive only throughthe efforts
of four people in Wingham,
and now they are wondering
if the effort has been worth
it, If the upcoming general
meeting fails to draw people
willing to work and make the
unit a true 'Huron County
Unit', it will fold.
MS is anunusual,
debilitating disease. The
cause has not been pin-
pointed, hence there is, no
cure. Yet its effects are well
documented, ranging 'from
the mildest form with no im-
pairmr11ent to the most severe
requiring institutional care.
in this the International
Year of Disabled Per-
sons, it shouldn't be too
much to ask that people be
willing to • help their
neighbour.

Huron County Unit of the MS
Society
Interesting course
Dear Editor:
I am taking a Visiting
Home Support, Workers
course at Conestoga College
in Vanastra. The course is
twelve weeks. It goes from
September 21 to December.
11. The course involves
growth and — development,
family centered maternity
care, care of .the ill or con=.
valescent, first aid, nutrition
and food preparation, home
management and com-
munications and in-
terpersonal relationships.
During the course we have
a lot of guest speakers and
we also go out to different
places. I:think it is a really
interesting course.. It is
something that is going to be
needed due to lack of nursing
homes and expensive
hospital care.
Yours: truly,
Patsy Keller
