Town council agreed to place stop signs at the
corner of Cambria Road and Nelson Street to put an
end to a councillor's claim that people were racing
'down the street.
Council passed bylaw 66 last week, implementing a
recommendation from the traffic committee to place
a stop sign on Cambria Road. The bylaw also
prevents parking on the north side of Bennett Street
from Bayfield Road to Walnut Street.
Traffic committee chairman, Jim Magee told
council that it was imperative to slow 'traffic along
Cambria Road for the safety of school children.
"School children cross there every day and it is
imperative to slow traffic," he said. "People are
racing down this street."
Deputy -reeve Bob Allen said he wasn't convinced
that the erection of stop signs was the answer and
claimed a traffic study would indicate if problems
existed.
"There would be more noise in the area if the
traffic is stopping and going again+" he said. "We
shoed do a study on the flow of traffic through town
and ndto just put up stop signs. There should be a
traffic count and we should get an expert in."
Councillor Elsa Haydon said the bylaw was looking
at traffic in isolation and council needed to look at the
whole picture. Jim Searls claimed a traffic study
could be conducted for little cost adding that a study
should be completed before signs are erected.
Traffic committee member, John Doherty said the
committee gave the matter thought and suggested
that the price of safety was cheap. -
"Signs are costly but put that cost against the life of
a child," he said. "We are concerned for the lives of
children crossing there and we shouldn't endanger
their lives."
Cambria Road is an attractive route for motorists
because there are, no traffic signals councillor Stan
Profit said adding that the traffic committee's
mandate was not to get people around town quickly.
"The traffic committee attempts to get you from
point A to point B safely, not quickly," he said. "We
should count the pedestrian traffic, that's what we're
talking about."
Councillor Glen Carey said it was displeasing to
hear councillors attack the traffic committee
recommendation and urged that stop signs be tried at
the intersection as a stop gap measure.
"Try it and if things don't work out then do
something else."

Permit values increase
If the building and construction in-
dustry is in a slump the figures from the
building inspector's office don't relect
that trend. To date this year, the value of
permits in Goderich is up by ahnost $1
million over figures from the same
period last year. The number of permits
has also increased substantially and this
year 144 permits have been issued
compared to 120 at the same time in 1980.
Commercial construction is up by
$100,000 over last year's figures. The
dollar value for government and in-
stitution construction is down drastically
this year to $387,785 compared to
$1,982,300 last year, The big gains this
year are in industrial permits.' In 1980
there were six industrial permits issued
valued at $189,657. This year, 14 in-
dustrial permits have been issued at a
value of $2,472,640.
There has been only one new single
residential unit constructed this year but
more money is being spent in minor
residential repairs. In 1980 53 permits
amounted to $211,310 while 1981 figures
have reached $360,815 with 90 permits
issued.
