Runnaway-On Saturday morning
last while Mr. L. Day, Jr., was deliv-
ering milk the horse he was driving
began to kick and kicked itself free
of the wagon. It ran home with only
the harness.
A week in Exeter -Mr. W. L. Clark
who has had a wide experience in
dealing with young people especially
boys and young men, is holding a
week of special services in the Meth-
odist churches in town. On Sunday
Morning last he conducted a service
in Main street church, a mass meet-
ing in James street in the afternoon
and union services in the evenings
Services have been held during the
week and will be continued until
Friday evening. 1VIr. Clark is doing
a great work among the young peo-
ele throughotit Canada and the Unit-
ed States and everyone, should coma
out to hear him.

The late Mrs. Knight -On Wednes-
day 0.1 last week Mrs. Charles Knight
passed away at her residence on Stat-
ion street at the age of 81 years. The,
deceased has been ailing for somet
time and during her illness had suf-
fered inticb. She was born in Whin: -
shire England, in 1830 and in 1857
was married to the late Charles
Knight, who predeceased her on Aug-
ust 29th, 1000. Shortly atter their
marring° they eagle to London where
Mr, Knight secured a position as
brakeman on the Grand Trunk. They
later moved to :Paris and after 'that.
'Mr. Knight was appointed night sta-
tion agent aa London. 'where they re-
mained for twelve years. Their 110Xt.
MOW! WAS to St. Thomas and in 18 /8
they moved to :Exeter. The deceased
lady possessed many virtuous quali-
ties and was held in high esteem by
her many friends. She is survived
by four sons and one daughter --

Henry Willert is Reeve
of Stephen.
At a meeting of 'the ratePaYera of
Stephen called Tuesday afternoon,
tor the purpose of nominating can-
didates tor the reeveship, Mr. Henry
Willert, of Dashwood, was elected by
acclamation. The vacancy in the cow-
cil'was caused by the death of Sam-
uel Sweitzer about two weeks ago.

• The Exeter High Sphool held
their annual field day on Friday last
Quite a number came up from the
Lucan High School to take part, but
shortly after they arrived here it
commenced to rain. A number of
the sports, however, were pulled .off

• Citizen Died.
Thomas D. Stanley, magistrate, of
St. hlarys, died at an early hour on
Friday morning of last week of pneu-
monia, after a few days' illness. De-
ceased was a leading citizen, identi-
tied with every important measure
in the late history of the town. His
fire, life and accident insurance bus- 1.;
iness was the largest: of its kind
Western Ontario. The agencies of
the G. N. W. Telegraph Co. and the "
Canadian Express 'Co were also hand-
led by him until a year ago, when
he disposed of the Express agency.

A widow and five children survive.
Deceased was born in Bidthilph town-
ship on May 22, 184f1.

Kirkton Fair
lilverYthing was at Kirkton Fair,
but the people last Friday. Xt. start-
ed in 'about half past ten to rain and
it kept it up all day. A 'few paesed
through the gates but the number
was small, The rain, however, did
not daunt many of the exhibitors for
most of the classes were well kepre-
sante& In the building where the
ladies work, fruit and vegetable
were shewn the exhibits were good
and some of the older ones' state that
the exhibit of roots and vegetables
was never better
The President, Robert Berry, and
the Secy.-Treas. A.mos Doupe, held on
to their usual cheerful and genial
manner in spite of the fact that ev-
erything was going out and. nothing
coming in.
The St. Marys band was present.
The concert that was arranged for
the evening was called off.
