Lakefront cottagers forrn
association in Ashfield
Robert Kissack was
elected president off the Ash-
field Lakefront Association
at a recent meeting.
Secretary -treasurer and vice
president is Geoff Walker.
Several items were
discussed which have been a
problem to many cottagers
over the years such as the
responsibility for the
maintenance of the roads
leading from Highway 21 to
the cottage area, and the
removal of snow.
The cottagers would like to
see a one mile limit banning
all commercial fishing from
the Colborne and Ashfield
Boundary on the south to the
northerly boundary of Ash-
field Township at Amberley.
In the Ashfield Township it
is estimated that there are
600 cottagers alone the
Lakeshore. It is the desire of
the members. of the
Association to work closely
with the Ashfield Township
Council in regard to matters
pertaining to the cottagers.
Social News
Many visitors were in
attendance for the
Thanksgiving service at
Christ Anglican Church,
Port Albert Sunday af-
ternoon. The Rev. Robert
Crocker conducted the
Communion Service. In his
message he 'spoke about
Canada's Natural Resour-
ces, and that each one is a
trustee of this country. On
many occasions people from
other countries have more
faith in this land than do
Canadians, he said.
Bright sunshine beckons
many fishermen to Port
Albert and the 'Nine Mile
River. Several rainbow•were
• caught, but in conversation
with several fishermen,
fishing was just poor to fair.
Sam and Nancy. Gowan
entertained their family to a
Christmas party on
Thanksgiving Day.. The
Cowans in a few days will be
heading south to Newport
Richey, Florida, to their
winter home. The Cowan
home was all decorated for
the festive occasion, the.
children receiving their gifts
'from Santa Claus,- who was
played by Sam Cowan.
Attending. from London was

children, Tracy and • Ben-
jamin; from. Mississauga,

Susan Worsell from
Goderich spent Tuesday in
the city of Toronto.
The village's oldest
resident Jean Lednor, 97, has
vacated her summer home
and has returned to
Hamilton to spend several
weeks with her daughter
Agnes Brentwood. To assist
her, was her daughter Agnes
and her daughter Mary
Dickson from Toronto,. Also
visiting at the Lednor home
for the Thanksgiving holiday
was Frank Knox from
Hamilton. Frank Knox can
trace his ancestry back to
John Knox who was born in
Scotland in 1515.
Mery and Myra Lahn and
children Geoff Pierce and
Peggy from London spent
the Thanksgiving weekend
at their cottage in Port
Albert. Also Visiting the
Latins was Reta Smith from
Waterloo, mother of Myra
Lahn and Jim and Barbara
Bulmer and, children
Alexandra and Matthew
from Cambridge (Hespeler).
Murray Graham and his
wife Mary left Saturday
morning for . their hunting
camp 150 miles north west of
'Thunder Bay, where they
will be moose hunting. The
Grahams have been hunting
as a team for the past 15
years. Murray has been an
ardent hunter for 30 years. it
has been .10 years since he
last shot a moose. The
Grahams have operated a
restaurant in Monkton for
the last 14 years. Seven
years ago they became the
owners of a cottage in Port"
Albert, and at the present
time .they are winterizing it
with plans to retire to the
village in the very, near
future.
The writer, while walking
on the second concession of
Ashfield Township Saturday
morning near the lake,
observed a red fox.
A St. Bernard dog has been
seen running in the village on
several occasions this week.
Fromall indications it ap-
pears as if it is lost.
Coo. Coo. Valley
In reading the history of
Ashfield Township, we find
the name of Coo -Coo Valley.
This is a very interesting
name, and one that would
indicate to you that perhaps
many years ago, a very
important battle took place
at Coo.Coo. Valley.
But history reveals that in
1859, the first saw mill was
built on the E.>/z or S.'/z of
Lot 10, Con. 9. Ashfield Twp.
E.D. along the Nine Mile
River which flowed through
Lot 10 and emptied out at
Port Albert. The site of this
mill was once known as
Coo.Coo Valley.
William and Elizabeth
Shackleton built this mill,
which turned out lumber
from the logs as the forests
were cleared. Fire destroyed
the mill.
A second mill was built
and this one hada penned up
race under the. mill .which
gave power to the water-
wheel. For many years this
mill turned out lumber and
shingles for the buildings.
Then it became a grist
mill, where the farmers
from the surrounding area
had their grain chopped.
Herman Phillips ran the
grist mill until the early
•1960s. We will have to visit
Lot 10, Con. 9 and see what
remains of Coo.Coo. Valley.
