The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-10-07, Page 11pen House held f Almost 100 people attended the Open House on Sunday, October 4 at the United Church Manse in Dungannon to celebrate with Mrs. Edith Cowan ( Augustine) her 95th birthday. Mrs. Cowan looked lovely in a mauve dress adorned with a pink and white corsage as she received the many friends and relatives who came to congratulate her. Five of her six children were present along with 11 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild as well as several other relatives and many dear, old friends. They came from Auburn, Blyth, Brussels, Burford, Dungannon, Goderich, Guelph, London, Midland, Nile, Port Colborne, Sarnia, Stratford and Windosr as well as from Edmonton, Alberta, and Mt. Clemens, Michi r n." Tea and assorted cookies and squares were served during the afternoon open house. Following this, 55 relatives remained for a delicious smorgasbord dinner served at the manse. A successful Arthritis cam- paign was conducted during September in the Dungan- non, Nile and surrounding area, raising $451.70 up from $270.00 last year. On Thursday of last week, Mrs. Graham McNee, Mrs. Robert Irvin, Mrs. George Cowan and Mrs. LaVerne Pentland attended the Huron West Rally of the Huron Perth Presbyterial held at Donnybrook. About 150 friends and relatives attended the 25th anniversary celebration held for Ivan and Jean (Errington) Henderson of Weston held on Saturday evening at the Agriculture Hall. Their fam-. ily consists of four, Greg of Calgary, who was unable to attend, Brian, Darlene and Darryl. Ken and Lois Thomas, Wendy and Jennifer of Bol- ton spent the weekend with Lois's parents, Mr.•and Mrs. Tom Webster. Lois was a bridesmaid 25 years ago for Jean (Errington) Henderson. Last Monday was a blue Monday for some in parts of the village and countryside as they were without hydro, heat and water. Open House was held on Sunday from 2 - 4 at the United Church manse, home of George and Doris Cowan in honour of Mr. Cowan's mother, Edith, who celebrat- ed her 95th birthday. Best wishes. • Congratulations to Don and Dawn Sowerby who cele-. brated their 25th anniversary 'on Friday evening at Holm- esville. The Sowerbys at one time resided on the farm south of the village now owned by Charlie and Rose Travis. Mr. Len MacGregor, Extension Assistant for the Ministry of Agriculture, Hur- on County for the past 11 years, has been transferred to the Kemptville College of Agricultural Technology. Len, his wife and family have resided in the house. just south of the United Church since 1978. Congratulations to Alvin and Carol Becker of Dash- wood on the birth of their son on September 15 at St. Joseph's Hospital, London. A brother for Heather Ann and grandson for Benson and Florence Shackleton of Ash- field. Rod and Margaret McKen- zie of Goderich, formerly of Ashfield, are grandparents again with the birth on September 19th at Calgary, Alberta of Dianne Carol, a third daughter for their son, ungannon doings By Merle Park Murray and wife Julianne. A new sister also .for Martin. Sympathy is extended to the immediate family and relatives of the late Paul Riegling, who died in London on Monday in his 6th year,of injuried received in an accid- ent on September 9. Mrs. Pat Ott, Matthew and Andrew of Kitchener spent the weekend with her par- ents, Irvine and Colleen Eedy. Mrs. Lee Shetler spent a" few days last week in Sarnia with her sister, Mrs. Harvey Cates. She returned home Friday night. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Park were dinner guests on Satur- day evening with Mr. and Mrs. Mike Bendig of Goder- ich. Bus and Cynthia Anderson have purchased the home on the main street previously owned by the late Les and Mary Schultz. They hope to be completely moved and settled in by next weekend. Work on the exterior of the new West Wawanosh Insur- ance is almost completed and it adds such an improvement to the village. Workmen are busy plastering the interior and it is hoped that maybe the grand opening can be held before the snow flies.,, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Pent- land were pleasantly surpris- ed by their family on Sunday, when they honoured them with a surprise dinner at the Agriculture Hall on the occa- sion of their silver wedding anniversary which is. actually October 6. Their family con- sists of Jim, wife Joanne and Jacqueline of Lucknow, Kathy, Paul and Laurie. Con- gratulations and many more happy years Ron and Yvonne. • On Wednesday of last week, Chevalier Rev. Fred J. Morrell O.F.J., of Toronto and his mother, Mrs. H. Morrell pf Clinton visited with his sister, Mrs. Jack Smith. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smith and son Lloyd visited in London with their daughter, Mrs. Helen Castrenis and their son, Doug Smith, wife and family. Tom, Tracey and Terri 5th birthday Wall spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Farrish of Listowel. The latter visited with Mrs. Wall and family when returning the children on Sunday. Dungannon United Church Mr. Cowan spoke on, Living the Sacrament, and the child- ren's story was, The Last Supper. The sacrament of communion was observed. The choir sang, Rise Up, 0 Men of God. Choir practice will be on Tuesday evening at Nile, Wednesday 'at Dungannon. Nile • Explorers will begin their '1981-82 year at the, church on Monday evening. Dungannon C.G.I.T. girls are looking for leaders so they may continue with their group. Secretarial services for both churches are being provided by Mrs. Alison Paolin of Nile. The congreg- ations are most grateful to Christmas Country Fair dates closer Colborne Township's 16th annual Christmas Country Fair will be the highlight of events in this district at the Saltford Valley Hall, '/a mile north of Goderich, east off Highway 21 on Wednesday, October 21 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, October 24from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Every year this fair draws a large crowd from near and far. Along with the display and sale of local arts and crafts and country baking, each year new crafts are displayed. So . plan to be there '- meet you at the fair. 4-H news The 4-11 group meeting held on. Wednesday, September 30 opened with the' Pledge and Kathy Schoemaker read the, roll call to which all members answered appropriately. The leaders demonstrated how to separate whites and' yolks in the eggs and a few members tried the three various methods. . During the meeting the. members made a cheese souffle and two different types of homemade salad dressings. The members then sampled the souffle and had a salad with dressing on it. All the members liked the salad but a few didn't care for the souffle. The members discussed egg nutrition and how to use up extra egg whites and yolks. The members finally decided on a name for the group for this project. It is "Chicken Rustlers".
