Pizazz, a 12 -year-old thoroughbred mare ridden by Desmond Leeper took second place in the Inter- mediate cross-country trials out of a field of nine horses. This was the highest level of cross-country competition at the event and was com- posed of a 21/2 mile gallop through fields, a stream, and forest. There were 20 jumps ranging from water jumps, Helsinki, coffin, drop fence, coop, cordwood, oxers, stone walls and special 'knock- down jump' designed to be easily knocked. down unless it is jumped correctly. Pizazz managed a faultless round in spite of the muddy footing and was only six seconds behind the first place horse. Pizazz also ,placed fifth in the R.H. Trollope Memorial Challenge Point -to -Point Steeplechase. Of the 12 starters, seven horses failed to complete this gruelling race. Bristol Cream was entered in a 3/4 mile cross-country flat races, This young horse has always loved to run and the Leepers thought it would be a nice break frau the Dressage ring for him. Of the field of nine horses some had even raced on the track. Due to a poor start, Bristol was dead last at the beginning of the race. Marlene Leeper, who was riding Bristol, decided that she would let Bristol "do his own thing" and leaned forward and told her horse to "go for it." Bristol passed every horse in what became an exciting race, putting his heart and soul into getting to the front. He won the race and as a result received the red ribbon, $100 first prize money, silver fox -head goblet and a beautiful silver tray. Bristol paid $3.30 for every $1 wagered on him but next year he probably won't be such a dark horse since he has now established a Show strong tourney effort BY TD The .GDCI junior girls basketball team defeated Seaforth here Thursday 54-34 to record their second win in two Huron -Perth Conference starts. Kim Fritzley had 21 points to lead the Vikingsto vic- tory. Anne Allan had 11 and Allison Graham added 10. Nancy' Bugler had three points for the Vikings. Lucille Delaney was Seaforth's top scorer with 14 points. The Vikings played an aggressive full court press which gave them a 27-18 halftime lead and proved too much for Seaforth to over- come. Coach Lynn Meyers' Vikings play at home twice this week, Wednesday against Norwell and Thursday against Wingham. The Vikings showed a strong effort in their tour- nament here Saturday, reaching the championship finals before losing. In their first game, the Vikings defeated Sarnia Central 32- 23. Advancing to the 'semi-. finals, the Vikings: got by Strathroy 29-28 in a real cliff - ha nge r. In the championship final, the Vikings came up against a strong St. Mary's of Kit- chener team who defeated them 48-23 to take the tournament title. ll Kitchener reached the finals on the strength of a 36- 35 win over London Mont- cahn and an easy 52-17 romp over Stratford Central in the semi-finals.
