The GDCI senior Vikings
shut out the Stratford
Central Rams 24-0 in the
opening game of the Huron -
Perth Conference football
schedule Thursday in
Stratford.
Jeff Feagan's two first half
touchdowns sparked the
Viking victory. Feagan ran
60 yards off tackle in the first
quarter and went over from
the 12 -yard line in the second
quarter for the major scores.
Rob Plunkett kicked a 30 -
yard field goal in the second
quarter and was successful
on three out of three convert
attempts.
The Vikings' other touch-
down came on a 45 -yard punt
return by speedster Darryl
Beattie in the fourth q ua rte r.
The Viking defence came
up big against both the run
and the pass, effectively
shutting down the Rams'
attack.
Coaches Ray Donnelly and
Chris Connor were not so
impressed, however, with
the Viking offence. The
Vikings had problems
establishing a consistent
running game which Don-
nelly put down to poor
blocking.
The Vikings make their
next start here Thursday
against the Norwell Red -
men. The game is part of a
junior -senior doubleheader
which starts with the junior
game at 1: 30 p. m.

Juniors
prove
worth on
home court
The GDCI junior boys
volleyball team only had the
home court advantage once
this season and on Thursday
used it very effectively in
demonstrating they intend to
be a -powerful foe in the
Huron -Perth Conference.
The juniors won five of
their six games with a
combined score of 85-68. The
Vikings' opener against
Wingham was their only loss
of 15-8 but came back with
great spirit and the powerful
scoring of Mike McCallum to
win the second game 15-9.
Seaforth seemed unable to
do much of anything in the
first tournament round and
the Vikes easily defeated
them 15-8 and 15-13 as Chris
Starkey and Shawn Doherty
showed excellence at the net.
In the final two games
against Clinton, a newcomer
to the team, Jim Keller,
showed that height is
definitely a factor in the
game and continued to use
this trait in fine blocking and
spiking, carrying the juniors
to 15-8and'17-15 wins.
Tournament play con-
tinues -in-Listawe1 on iced
nesday when Goderich will
meet the toughest com-
peition in the conference.
Sharon Berry caught the ball and that's all that mattered while Dan Duncan gave her a
helping `glove'. The two were on the basement staff team who met the nurses in one of the
slowpitch games last Tuesday night held to raise money for AM&G's Intensive Care Unit.
About $800 was collected. (Photo by Cath Wooden)
Juniors. win 35-0
• BY TD
The GDCI Vikings junior
football team started strong
in Huron -Perth Conference
play Thursday with a 35-0
shutout victory over
Stratford Central in Strat-
ford.
The Vikings led 14-0 after
the first half. Joe Melady got
the only point of the first
quarter on a single resulting
from a missed field goal
attempt. Running back Ed
Craig, who ran up a total of
250 yards before being sat
out midway in the third
quarter, went 40 yards on a
sweep play for a second
auarter TD.
The other Viking first half
major came on a 12 -yard
pitch to Paul McCartney.
Melady converted.
In the third quarter,
quarterback John Thompson
went over on a close yardage
situation and Pete Stahl
scored on a six yard dive
play. Jeff Leleau scored the
Vikings' final touchdown on
a 12 -yard quarterback sweep
in the fourth _ quarter. Joe
Melady was successful on all.
three convert attempts.
The Vikings were able to
run outside almost at will
against a Stratford defence
that remained stacked up in
the middle and seemed
unable to adjust.
Craig, the leading rusher,
got good blocking from Pete
Stahl and Paul McCartney.
The offensive line did a good
job and quarterback John
Thompson seemed at home
in his position.
The Viking defence was
strong . allowing only five
first downs by Stratford. The
Vikings' aggressive play
caused seven turnovers.
Pete Stahl had two in-
terceptions acid a fumble
recovery and Darryl Madge
had" a strong game with an
interception and a fumble
recovery.
Andrew Telford had a
fumble recovery and Lee
Frisby intercepted a pass.
Dave Weaver played well at
his inside linebacker spot
and rookie Brian Fitz-
simmons performed well as
a defensive tackle.
This Thursday, the Vikings
will have a tougher op-
ponent, the Norwell Red -
men, who last week defeated
the Stratford Northwestern
Huskies 19-2.
