That will be part of the fun at Blyth Memorial Hall when Camerata puts on a special children's concert, Saturday, October 17 at 2 p -m. , The. concert includes the works of Brahms, Beethoven and Schubert among others but it's all wrapped up in a package of hilarious antics that will have even those Who think they h to classical music wishing the 50 minute concert would never end. The gorilla comes, in dur- ing a rather mixed-up ver- sion of "Little Red Riding Hood" that takes up 12 minutes of the concert. The concert's length can vary because ' it develops span taneously from. the . children's reactions and responses. • . • The group encourages par- ticipation from their young audience. An example would be that Camerata calls the "mood" section of its pro- gram. The children are ask- ed to suggest words which describe the feelings such, as. "happy" "sad",or "ex- cited". Cameratathen plays a piece which best illustrates those varying moods. Another part of the pro- gram is an "Opera Spoof", in which Mary Lou. Fallis satirizes cadenzas and other styles of operatic singing. Vocal pieces are chosen which are particularly ac- cessible and amusing to • children. The "Doll Aria'. from Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffman" is included along with songs from Winnie The , Pooh. ' Camerata includes four of the best musical artists in Canada: Kathryn Root, painist; James Campbell, clarinetist; Coenraad Bloemendal, cellist and Mary Lou Fallis, sporano. Tickets for the concert are $3 for both children and adults or may still be pur- chased as part of the Blyth Centre • for the Arts' Children's Series which in- cludes a stage adaptation of "Charlotte's Web" by Erewfion theatre on Satur- day, . March 13 and the delightful puppet show "Moments Mouse-ical" by Frog Print Theatre on May 8, all for only $6 per person. Tickets may be ordered by writing Blyth Centre for the Arts, Box 291, Blyth- or- call— ing 523-9300. • Grands plan banquet The Past Noble Grands Club ' of Goderich Rebekah Lodge No. 89 held its meeting September 14 with 18 present in the MacKay Centre for Seniors with the new president, Mills. In the Goderich Township Community Centre, Holmesville No gifts please. Best Wishes <• raly> "Songs from t e Theatre" at Blyth, It will be a quick dash from the stage of 'one -Of On- tario's biggest summer festivals to another when Beth Anne Cole opens the winter. theatre program at the Blyth Centre for the Arts on October 7. Miss Cole will be starring in Rose Marie at the Shaw Festival at Niagara -on -the - Lake until a few daysbefore the performance in Blyth of her one -woman show "Songs From The Theatre". Miss Cole drew rave reviews for her starring role in the musical at the Shaw Festival, one more testimony to the talent -of this rising star of the musical stage. Songs From The Theatre has been polished over many weeks of performing by Miss Cole across Canada in the last two years again to rave reviews and full houses. -McKenzie Porter of the Toronto Sun, rhapsodized: "Beth Anne Cole can act as well as she can sing. And she can sing as sweetly as a sparrow, as passionately as a nightingale and as ironical- ly as a mocking bird. If necessary, she can dance with comparable artistry." Miss Cole's show takes songs from the theatre, some familiar, some long forgot- ten and makes them live again. Alone on stage except for her accompanist, with few costumes or props she provides a full evening of entertainment. Fanny Brice, George Gershwin, Rogers and Hart oor Jacques Brel - she puts her own delightful stamp on all of their work. While she i§ making her biggest markof the live theatre stage these days, Miss Cole is also well known to youngsters for her fre- quent appearances on Mr. Dressup on CBC television. She has also made many other television appearances over the years since she returned to Canada after two years of study and training in England. Series tickets are still available for the three events of the theatre series at Blyth which also include Barry Morse starring in Sleuth on March 2 and Rick Wellwood in Leacock at Leisure on April 21. Series tickets are only $14 for the three events. Single tickets for Songs From the Theatre are now available at $6 each and may be reserved by call- ing 523-9300.
