Country's Eric Miller, left and Harry Kerr, right, occurred
during Thursday night's B division slowpitch playoff game
Slowpitch news
Coyotes come
Well folks, the playoffs are
here and just about
everything that could go
wrong...didl Among can-
cellations due to tour-
naments, base umpires
failing to show up, and above
all, a tie game called on
account off darkness, the
phone has not quit ringing:
In A divjsion; Meneset
opened the second season
with a 12-1 decision over the
Coyotes. It looked as though
their second game would go
the same way as -Mepeset
opened up a 7-1 first inning
lead.
But those Coyotes can
never by ruled out. A ten -run
rally in the fifth led to a 14-10
Coyote victory to tie the best -
of -five series at one game
apiece
These two teams - will
decide the series this
Wednesday, and if
necessary, Thursday. A
Coyote victory is possible but
then too, the Argos might
beat the Ticats some day.
The other A series is the
more closely contested. Port
Albert took the first game 6-
3, but Signal -Star came back
to win the second by a score
of 6-2.
The third game Sunday
night produced a 6-6 tie after
eight innings but was called
on account of darkness. Thit
series, while the outcome is
between • Carlow and Smiths Carpetbaggers. Although not in doubt, will be a long
Smiths won the game 15-3, Carlow took the series and will, one with plenty of action. Be
meet the Oldtimers next. (Photo by Cath Wooden) sure to catch it Wednesday,
and Sunday of this -week.

Because of the darkness
problem, night games
beginning this Sunday,
August 30 will have a start
time of 6:30.
The B division again
' produced some . excellent
ball.The heavily favored
Carlow team had their work
cut out with a vastly . im-
proved Smiths team.
Taking the first game 16-
15, Carlow lost the second 15-
13. Smiths came close ` on
Sunday but a late inning
'rally by Carlow proved too
much to . overcome. An ex-
cellent ' finish to a -good-
season for Smiths. Carlow
now advances to the second
round. •
The other B series saw the
Oldtimers jii in front with
a 6-1 victory, • but the
Optimists bounced back with
a 13-12 win to tie the 'series.
The tic breaker on Sunday
GODERICH SIGNAL.STAR, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 1981—PAGE 9
bac to defeat
had an unbelievable score
for slowpitch, a 1-1 tie in the
sixth.
The Oldbiniers stole a run
in the seventh to, seal a 2-1
win and now advance to a
best of three series with
Carlow beginning Tuesday
night. It seems that street
talk is unreliable so this
correspondent will just go
out on a limb and pick the
Oldtimers to take the B
divisiontitle in three games.
C. division action saw the.
Tickers eliminate Bluewater
in two straight games, 13-9
and 17-6. They now await the
outcome of the Cobra-
Renagade series. Cobras lost
the first game 8-6 in eight
innings but won the second
game - 7-4. The outcome of
that series will be known by
press time.
Congratulations should be
extended to Rene Arsenault
and the Renegades .for
hosting a fine tournament in
Benmiller last weekend.
Winner of the B division was
Garb & Gear while Signal-
Star Paper Leafs took the
honors in the A division.
In an A -B dlanipionship
match, Garb & Gear
defeated Signal -Star by a
score of 8-1.
