Go -Kart
Issue

1WSHARON DIETZ
Ashfield Township Council
is still deliberating on the
contentious issue of go-kart
racingat the Port Albert air-
port. Following a public
meeting Tuesday evening,
August 4 attended by 75 per- •
rannent and summer
residents of the area, Reeve
Warren -Zinn said council is
considering the matter
under consultation with their
solicitor, Dan Murphy, and
they hope to make a decision
on their course of action in
the near future.
11 council takes the posi-
tion presented to them at the
public meeting, they will do
whatever is within their
means to stop go-kart racing
at the old airport.
The residents who attend-
ed the meeting presented a
petition outlining their op-
position to any change or
amendment to the existing
agricultural land use
designation for any commer-
cial or industrial use not
directly related to
agriculture.
The petition was signed by
approximately 590 people.
The purpose of the public
meeting was to give Can -
Kart Ltd., of Rexdale, the
company which wants to
lease the land for go-kart
racing, an opportunity to ex-
plain their proposal to the
residents in the area. The
meeting was also called to
giVe the loCal residents a
chance to voice their con-
.cerns and objections.
The -meeting opened with
reeve Zinn's announcement
that Can -Kart bad informed
him by telephone at 4:30 that
afternon they would not at-
tend - the . meeting but
perhaps in the future, they
would approach council
againnbout holding races at
the airport. •
Zinn said he regretted that
Can -Kart had chosen not to
attend the meeting because
he felt it would have cleared
some misunderstanding.
Council invited the residents
to make their position known
to council even though Can -
Kart was not present.
Council's solicitor, Dan
MurPhy, suggested - -the
residents-. Otitikte 'their "fictsi-
,
tion and leave petitionsvith
council to be considered if
council, must make a deci-
sion on the matter in the
future.
Michael Garvey, whose
property adjoins the airport,
told the meeting he feared
Can -Kart would approach
council during the winter
months when the summer
residents have returned
home and are inactive.
"We could come back and
the go-karts would be in,"
said Garvey. He suggested
that since the township has
no zoning by-law in place,
,,,..__CaJticart could_ go in and__
start racing next week.
"This would become an ex-
isting land use and when the
zoning by-law is passed,"
warned Garvey, "there
would be nothing to be done
to stop them."
Garvey asked that council
act now using whatever
means at their disposal to
stop go-kart racing at the
airport. He referred to a let-
ter he had written to council
which cited several reasons
why go-kart racing is
undesirable ,„ at the Port
Albert location including
overflow crowd conditions,
noise pollution, poor sanita-
tion, devastation of proper-
ty, overnight camping and
improper beach facilities to
handle the crowd.
Garvey said if Can -Kart is
willing to spend $100,000. to
prepare the track for gocart
racing, it would be "some
kind of undertaking".. He
said he is concerned with the
initial stages because this
type of thing usually starts
small and then expands. He
was concerned about the
racing "and all the things
that go on with it".
"I'm not prepared to live
with it," he stated.
Council's solicitor inform-
ed the meeting that
,subsequent to passing their
'Isecondary plan, a muncipali-
,, ty must pass a zoning by-
law. Murphy said Ashfield
Township's zoning by-law
was not prepared as yet and
it would take considerable
time. He said he could not
foresee the zoning by-law in
place by next spring.
Murphy also stated that
council cannot pass a by-law
prohibiting go-kart racing
any more than they can pro -
!bit someone building a pig.
