Faith must be in the person
BY THE REVEREND
FATHER
ED J. DENTINGER,
PASTOR OF PARISH
OF ASHFIE,LD
Although the Jewish peo-
ple had different ideas about
the sort of person the Christ
would be, they eagerly
awaited His coming. Peter
and the other Apostles had
grown up against this
background of expectancy.
They, like everyone else,
looked forward to the corn-
ing of Christ.
It is not difficult to ap-
preciate, therefore, 'the
tremendous act of faith
Peter was making when he
said: 'You are the Christ'.
Centuries of longing lay
behind these words. Peter
was -affirming the hopes of
the Jewish people, the hopes
expressed in the writings of
inisteSttlrfS
the prophets that surely now
was at last being fulfilled.
Jesus had already asked
the disciples what men were
saying about him and they
had told him. Only then did
Jesus ask the .crucial ques-
tion: 'But who do you say I
am?'.
And Peter spoke -up, You
are the Christ, the Son of the
living God.'
The Jewish nation was to
reject Jesus. He didn't fit in
with their ideas of -what the
Christ should be.

But Peter wasn't concern-

He had made a personal
discovery. Hisfaith was in

the Christ'.
This too must be your
faith. For every Christian,
the discovery of Jesus must

be a personal discovery. Our
faith does not consist in
knowing about Jesus; it con-
sists in knowing Jesus. Our
faith is essentially in a per-
son. Jesus is that person.
And he asks each, of us the
same question he asked
Peter: `Who do you say I
am?'
Upon your answer will de-
pend your personal response
and relationship with Him.
