Bantams overcome Wingham,
meet Walkerton in WOAA finals
After a slow start, the
Goderich Bantam `hardball
team came back and beat
Wingham twice in a row to
win their best -of -three
WOAA semi-final playoff .
series.
In Wingham on August 11,
the local boys tied the series
with a 5-3 win. Pitcher Jim
Keller opened the scoring in
the second inning, then the
team went ahead 3-0 in the
third on runs from Trevor.
Erb and Dave Smith.
Wingham comeback in the
bottom of the third to score
twice, but Goderich spread
the score in the fifth with a
run from Rob Gibbons. Once
again, Wingham brought the
score within one with a tally
in their fifth. Gibbons scored
his second run of the day in
the seventh and the boys won
it 5-3.
The Bantams took the
series the next night in
Goderich with a decisive 13-6
score. After going. ahead 3-0
in the first inning on runs by
4Viiatthew Buchanan, Ken
lamer and Jim Keller, the
boys exploded for nine runs
in the fifth innings.
Rob Gibbons scored 'twice
in the inning and single runs
went to Trevor Erb,
Buchanan, Lipner, Keller,
Shawn Rahbek, pitcher
David Almasi, and Darrell
Madge. Keller scored his
third run in the sixth inning.
The Goderich boys opened
their best -of -three WOAA
final series against
Walkerton . Monday night
here but came out on the
bottom end of a 12-2 score. .
Walkerton scored six runs
in the second inning and six
in the fourth off pitchers Jim
Keller then David Almasi for
the win. Keller scored one of
Goderich's runs in second
after Shawn Rahbek's
double. Darrell Madge got
the other run inthe fifth
inning.
The boys travelled to
Walkerton last night° for the
second game of the series.
Athletes compete at Sportsfest '81
Sportsfest '81 was held last
weekend in Owen Sound, and
several people from
Goderich competed in
events.
In the Fun Run, Connie
Macauley placed first in her
age division which tan five
kilometers. Scott Macauley
ran in his 15 km division and
placed fifteenth.
Earl Pennington organized
a slowpitch team for Spor-
tsfest which won their first
game against Owen Sound,
but lost to the Bayfield
Flyers who were the even-
tual A champs. The Port
Albert Pirates won their first
game, but lost to Listowel
Little England.
Sid Hall took a Mosquito
soccer team -and the they
-beat Listowel. in ;their first
game then lost to Elmira.
Susan Stadleman com-
peted in the table tennis
event and won her first game
in the 14 and over division,
but lost her second game.
In tennis, Brian Warrilow
teamed up with Fred Jewell
one day and Mel Gilbert the
other -day, and between them
managed to win the men's
doubles consolation. Mel and
Val Gilbert were runners-up
in the mixed doubles.
Fred Shoemaker
organized a ball hockey
team that won their first
game against the Listowel
Sonics and then were
defeated by the Owen Sound
Bullets.
Riders from all
over Ontario
race in Goderich
One hundred and twenty-
five professional and
amateur cyclists raced in
-Goderich on Sunday for
trophies and prize money.
Seven bikers from Goderich
competed.
In the amateur classes, the
following people were
winners: 8-9 year-olds, Mark
Decrie, Bramalee, Micheal
Hrabb, Kincardine; 10-11.
year-olds, Robert. Beraldo,
Burlington, Chris Hrabb,

Gord's closes out fastball season with two wins
Gord's Sports closed out
the regular season in fine
fashion by defeating Canada
Company 8-5 and routing
Green & Parent 11-1.
Against Canada Company,
Gord's overcame a 4-1 deficit
to win. C.C. took a 4-1 lead on
Brian Bowinan's solo homer
and Dean Doherty's two -run
single. They lost the lead in
the sixth when Rick McLean,
Jim Ginn, and Phil Petrie
knocked in runs. They added
two more in the seventh to
ice the'contest: Dave Scholl,
Petrie, and Ginn led Gord's
with two hits apiece while
Tom O'Brien; Bowman, and
Doherty had two each for
C.C.
In their win over Green
and Parent, Gord's - took
advantage of seven op-
position.errors in routing the
seventh place Thunderbirds.
Gord's scored seven runs in
the second inning.
With the outcome decided
early, the on base per-
centage race between Bob
Reihl and Dave Scholl
became the focal point of the
game. Scholl reached base
twice to nip Reihl who was on
three times by .003.
Dennis Williamson and
Dave McDonald each had
two hits, 'with both of
McDonald's coming in the
seven run second inning.
Scholl' and Des Courtney held
G&P to just three hits
McGees flex muscles
Mike F rayne unloaded two
home runs to lead a 15 -hit
attack as McGees pounded
Canada Company 11.5:
Canada Company jumped
to a 3-0 lead in the first inning
on Dean Doherty's RBI
single and Brian Shewfelt's '
two run single.
McGees tied it in the third
and put the game away in the
fifth on the strength of Mike
Petre's three -run homer and
Frayne's first homer.
League batting champ Ron
Klages had two triples and a
double while Paul Kelly,
Rick and Ron Sowerby, and -
Petre had two hits for the
Pontiacs.
Tom O'Brien and Mike
Donnelly had two hits each
for Canada Company. Pit-
ching competently in the his
first start was Bob Tigert
who fell victim to McGees
fearsome attack. Rick
Sowerby and Ken Doer
shared mound duties for
McGees.

Dean Doherty threw a five -
hit shutout and went two for
three as Canada Company
broke a six game losing
streak by whitewashing
Dave Scholl is player of the
week after ' winning two
games and hitting .540.
Honorable mention goes to
Steve Frayne with two home
runs, Dean Doherty with a
five -hit shut out, and Simon
Langlois for 12 strikeouts.
