GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1981—PAGE 3 iefKing replies to letter for the list tim Dear Editor: In reply to Mr. G. C. White's letter of a couple of weeks ago, requesting statistical date on "elevator trucks only on the truck route": Firstly, the figures I quoted are- for the entire town of Goderich and show charges and warnings issued to all moving offenders. Regardless of which street the offence took place on or the type of vehicle involved, they are, to us, all violators. As for breaking down the traffic and noise offenders to show only "elevator" trucks on the truck route, we do not • break down offenders by in- dividual street or by class of vehicle. Even - if we did, would there be any dif-• Terence between a speeding ".elevator truck" (as Mr. White puts it) or any other truck? I have already pointed out, in my first letter, that police can .. only deal with un- necessary noise. There have been no charges of un- necessary noise laid against any tractor -trailer drivers simply because the. sound (noise) coming from these trucks is necessary when they are moving. This noise Need new area correspondent Dear Editor, ° I am no longer able to be the correspondent for the Kingsbridge News, due to personal reasons. 1 am sorry to have to quit so suddenly and hope that someone else will come for- ward and write the news, as 1 know it will be missed by some, especially former Kingsbridge natives who re- cieve your weekly paper. 1 wish to thank the staff of the Lucknow Sentinel and the Goderich Signal Star for the extras 1 have received as your correspondent. Yours truly, Delores Van Osch. comes from a variety of sources: engine and combus- tion, exhaust, intake, fan and tires. But road surface, temperature and wind velocity all play their part. Radar checks• on Elgin Avenue have been done by police in marked and un- marked cars, in uniform and in old clothes, and by a young lady in her own car us- ing the police radar. On 15 separate days the checks showed that no tractor -trailers were ex- ceeding the speed limit. Dur- ing the hours these checks weremade the hourly rate of tractor -trailers using Elgin Avenue West ran from an hourly average of 16.87 to a low of 0.50. The mean average for the total period was 7.17 tractor -trailers per hour. Tractor -trailers made up a i,,,tai ;,f 3.3 percent of the traffic flow during the period. Using tables listed in the Noise Pollution Publication 6, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, I have calculated that the "predicted one hour equivalent sound level from 30 metres from the centre of the roadway" is approx- imately 56 dBA. Using other tables in this publication l note that the maximum acceptable noise level for a truck of over 12 tons is 91 dBA, and that of a motor car is 82. From this rough check (and I am no expert and have no instruments to measure dBA), it would ap- pear that the noise on the truck route is well within the limits which these studies have outlined. Granted, in- dividual trucks would ex- ceed the 56 dBA prediction. If Mr. White wishes to pur- sue this publication (with its complicated technical ex- planations and charts) I shall be pleased to let .him. borrow my copy. This will be my final letter to the editor on the subject of noise by "elevator" trucks. I do not intend to see an ongo- ing correspondence as we have experienced in the past (the numerous letters on the scriptures were a good ex- ample xample of this). The ponce will do all they are permittedto do in enfor- cing the Highway Traffic. Act insofar as speeding and un- necessary noise from a vehi- cle are concerned. It will be of some comfort to Mr. White that the Goderich Elevators propos- ed route should eliminate 50 percent of the "elevator" trucks using Elgin Avenue. • Yours very truly, Patrick D.
