The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-08-12, Page 20PAGE 6A -GODERICH SIGNALSTAR. WEONF,SSDAY, AUGUST 12,1961 Protest go-karts Port Albert news Tom Livingstone, corresondent 529-7645 Ashfield Township Council was presented with a peti- tion signed by 590 Port Albert residents opposing the old airport property be- ing used as a go-kart track at a meeting August 4. Representatives from Can - Kart Limited of Rouble fail- ed to appear. Reeve Warren Zinn had received a call about 3 p.m. stating that they would not be in atten- dance. Dan Murphy, solicitor for the township, suggested that the group make its presentation to council anyway. The petitioners asked council to pass a bylaw to prohibit any development at .the old airport. It was obvious council was. concerned about what the ratepayers had to say and, just before the meeting ad- journed, Reeve' Zinn remarked that council was listening to the people. The meeting adjourned and the people filed out into the yard but at this time, Clifford Livingston, one of the promoters of the go- karts, had appeared and was sitting at the council table. The group returned tohear what he had to say. He was questioned by a member of the petition group regarding the noise that would be made by the go-karts and was in- formed that a recent study of a go-kart track in London. revealed that the noise could be heard for a distance of 21 miles. Livingston remarked, "It is finished," and walked out of the meeting. I am ' sure most of the. residents would be happy to take Livingston's parting words seriously, however they must urge council to pass the necessary legisla- tion to protect the tranquility of the village of POrt Albert. Historical Facts In the history of the village of Port Albert .we find that the people of the Roman Catholic faith were going to build a church in Port Albert but decided to build further north, and the site chosen was Kingsbridge where St. Joseph's Church now stands. It is interesting to note that the first Mass held ,in the village of Port Albert was at the McGlade home on South Street, which is "known to most people"in the area now as Martin Sideroad. Jean Ledner, age 97, born in Port Albert, recalls the McGlade Home quite vividly. Her aunt Sarah used it for a short time as a milk house. It was located on the north side of the road, just a short distance from the Martin farm. At the present time there are no signs of the McGlade home on South Street. In 1901, on the 5th Conces- sion of Ashfield at the Robert Durnin farm all ploughing was done with the walking plough. In ploughing a 10 acre field, a man would walk about 100 miles. Social News Isabelle Doherty and Shawn Doherty of Port Albert will fly to Timmins from London on Sunday, August 16 to visit with Ken and Nancy Doherty.
