The travel ads say "It's
better in the Bahamas" and
four members of Huron
Country Playhouse bought
the chance to investigate
that claim at the theatre's
challenge auction Sunday.
The quartet's $3,000 "fun-
ny money" bid outdid the
competition for two weeks'
accommodation at a resort
condominium, the most priz-
ed item at the auction spon-
sored by. the theatre in
Grand Bend.
The challenge auction
operated on a. funny money
system in which contributors
to the theatre fund were
given a $3 bill for bidding
purposes m exchange for
each real dollar donated.
In other words, the vaca-
tion a choice of stays at
condos in Mexico, Florida,
Hawaii, Colorado or the
Bahamas valued at $1,200 -
was won for $1,000 in con-
tributions pooled by the
theatre's general manager,
Heather Redick, and office
staff members Wendy Webb,
Lyn Alderdice and Janice
McIntosh.
Winning bids at the 2tr2-
hour auction totalled $21,940
in the funny funds or about
$7,313 in genuine currency.
Proceeds from the auction
bring the theatre's fund-
raising total to more than
$80,000 - about $20,000 from
the theatre's target figure,
Redick said.
She added that the funds
raised from special events,
such as the' auction, and
from individual contribu-
tions, foundation support
and corporate contributions
will be matchedtwo-for-one
by Wintario.
Among the more than 65.
items auctioned Sunday
were Karen Kain's ballet
slippers, Olympic high
jumper Greg Joy's
autographed track shorts, a

valued at $200, parachute
jump lessons, scuba diving
