Sunday night- and the ball
game is back on T.V.! ! So
I thought I would finish my
column and take it out to the
Signal -Star, but at 8 p.m. I
decided to see what was hap -
peeing at the harbour.
I almost turned to go to St
Christopher's Beach but
"no, I'll go another time" I
told myself.
If I hadn't changed my
mind, I might have missed
the gigantic ship in the har-
bour. It was five or six
stories high at one end, I
swear, and 730 feet long With
a 75 foot beam - the biggest
ship, I'm sure, to come into
the "Basin" for grain. It
holds - or rather - the ton-
nage is 182,526 if you please,
and the name is Canadian
Prospector, Toronto. •
What a. ship! I wondered
why it had five or six floors
above deck and a deckhand
said it had been an ocean
liner, was sold, now a few
hundred feet were added to
the bow end and now it is a
freighter.
. And I believe him. It cer-
tainly did look it - a fancy
freighter. I was just astound-
ed by the size of this ship.
There were quite a few
people on the dock and
everyone was talking to
whomever was near them
and the closest people to me
were a young couple from
Stratford who love to come
to Goderich. JUST the peo-
ple I love to meet!
First thing you know, we
are talking a mile a minute,
getting acquainted fast.
They both had cameras and
equipment with them so I
knew they had interesting
hobbies - or jObs. They too
were wondering about the
large ,ship, so we kept wat-
ching to see if it might be
leaving soon.
I couldn't see the other end
of the ship - it was getting
dark -when I realized "our"
end was moving away from
the dock. Then I knew this'
end was the stern, not the
bow and it was changing
position- end for end- to load
the other half of the hold.
They swung quite a way out
towards the middle of the
basin when the tugs came to .
life and took over, pushing it
the rest of the way - until the
bow was now beside us and
the high storied end was put
into position at the elevators.
This took an hour and a half
or more. The bow end was a
big blunt snout - almost
square.
Standing on the dock, I
could have leaned against
this ship at one time (I did
touch it) - it was less than
one foot from the planks. I
don't know how that man on
deck with the intercom could
make the captain
understand he still had- lots
of room to manoeuvre his
ship. One foot! Migosh!
Well, it was quite a thrill to
stand beside it and not be
able to see the men on deck.
The deck hands who were
handling the hawsers were
an interesting ° pair. They
wore trousers and life-
jackets and red bandanas on
their heads. I thought at .first
they might' be gypsies but
later we found they were just
Canadians. The one lad had
come from England over 20
years ago and had a very
nice speaking voice. I
thought I could detect a
slight English tone - but very
nice. They were very jolly -
but I've heard of jolly sailors
before. Haven't you? They
were happy. to answer all our
questions and the
photographer took a photo of
them which pleased them
very much. So, I promised to
send them a copy of the
Signal to their Thorold, On-
tario base. There were four
of us talking to them and we
all enjoyed Laughing with
them. What an interesting
two hours.
The young . couple from
Stratford have become pret-
