(..Photo by Joanne Buchanan, Point Farms offers fun for campers Point Farms Provincial Park, located just north of Goderich on Highway 21, of- fers excellent opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, picnicking and sports. This week, the visitor services staff has planned many ex- , citing events for area residents, park campers and visitors. The Huron County Library will visit the park with 'a travelling bookmobile at the Colborne Comfort Station from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 16. Join in with 'Kids Stuff' at the beach at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m. everyone is welcome to the Barn Ac- Watch animals, Wild animals may look cute and cuddly but they could' sPoil your camping . vacation. The Ontario.Safety League urges that' your viewing be done* at a safe distance. Probably the most ,dangerous animal . to • campers and canoeists in Ontario is the black bear. Sometimes we forget that all bears aren't• like Smokey or Yogi. They • are . • wild creatures. . Feeding the bear or leav- jng food around the campsite acts .as an enticement and the bear becomes a nuisance. If naturalists are unable to find a workable solution for a • "nuisance bear", the only resource is to kill it. • Along with the bear, camp= sites may be visited by numerous. other curious and hungry animals such as skunks, raccoons, and por- cupines. IN most cases they can be scared off by a flashlight or loud noise. You can prevent animal intru- sions by keeping your camp- site clean and your food lock- ed in your car or hung from a tree away from the site. While the Ontario Safety League recognizes the poten- tial danger of wild animals, campsite statistics show that the majority of inflicted in- juries are caused by domesticated • dogs. Dogs should ,not be approached unless the owner is present and gives permission, aft• If you're NEW IN TOWN and don't know which way to turn, Call the dome rpon. hostess at'524.7l6 , You'll be glad you did > ci tivity Centre for an hour of puppetry and games. Meet at the campfire cir- cle at 8:30 p.m. on. Friday, July 17 for a rousing round of rollicking repertoire. There will be games, songs, stunts and stories for everyone's enjoyment. On Saturday, July 18, try your creativity at `Outdoor. Art'- at 2. p.m. with spatter printing. 'You get a chance to. 'Meet a Friend Outdoors' at 4 p.m. if you meet at the old hotel site for, lots of adven- tures through the park. At 8 . p.m. visit the barn for a twilight presentation of fun films and more. • An informal church ser- vice ' and sing -a -long con- ducted by an; area minister will be held in the barn at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. To com- plete. your weekend see the water and small craft safety demonstration sponsored by the Red Cross Society at the beach at 2:30 p.m. It may just save a life! For more information about Point Farms, contact the Visitor Services staff (524-7124) or pickup a week- ly newsletter at the park's permit office. Sports equip- ment is available on a free loan basis from the same of- fice. ' Admission *to all these scheduled events is included in your camping fee or daily pass for day use. Have a great weekend! Accessibility survey... • from page IA curbs, steps, unuseable restrooms, narrow doorways and heavy doors. The purpose of the survey is to prepare' an accessibility guidebook—a pocket -sized directory of the towns and villages in the county focussing on features of im- portance to mobility -trained persons. The advance information will allow disabled resident's and tourists to plan their movements around the communities. Huyck explains that access guides have been printed in cities and towns across Canada. Using these as guidelines, the local group will produce a directory of Huron County, that will come up to in- ternational guidelines. Letters are being circulated to owners of businesses ' and managers of public facilities to introduce the project and to. ask for co-operation in arranging con- venient timesfor brief accessibility sur- veys of buildings. The Summer.Canada 'project grant will finance only the survey. Huyck will be contacting service clubs and other com- munity groups in hopes they will fund the printing of the directory. • The Access Guide of Huron County will be made 'available to the public through town halls,.11braries,'information centres, employment centres, the Day Centre for the Homebound andborder points. Controlled moose hunt to be h A controlled Moose Hunt, luinited to 240 Ontario resi- dent hunters, will be held in the Hearst-Kapuskasing and Chapleau areas of Northern Ontario this Fall, The participants of . this hunt were chosen from 8,500 applicants in a computerized draw held on May 6 by the' Ministry of Natural Resources. Licence Validation stickers were mailed on May 12 to those selected. The hunt will be limited on May 12 to those selected. The hunt will be limited to 1,200 Sportsmen in Wildlife Management Unit 23 (Hearst-Kapuskasing) and 1.,105 in Unit 31 (Cbapleau). Natural Resources Minister Alan Pope said this was in accordance with con- trolled hunting practice, "to relieve pressure on the Moose Herd in that part of the Province." Mr. Pope said that Ministry Staff in Northern Ontario are optimistic about the successf the program. • "Since it began two years ago, the reduction of hunters in Unit 23 achieved out targeted annual kill of 110 animals, less than half of 1978's harvest," the Minister said. He said hunters were ex- tremely pleased "with the less ld crowded conditions. the herd there had increased An aerial survey of moose by about 16 percent since last winter in Unit 23 showed controlled hunts began.
