Puppets
delight
children
Do people laugh at you?
How do you walk? How do
you swim? Aire you sad
because you can't do things
that other people can do?
Were you born like that or
did you havean accident?
These were some of the
questions Goderich children
asked four disabled puppets
when the Kids on the Block
puppet troupe visited here
last week.
Kids ..on the Block .is an
International Year of the
Disabled project which
originated in Washington,
D.C. and now has several
troupes in Canada. The
troupe of four, young pup-
peteers who visited Goderich
are from London and they
are touring all over south-
western Ontario this sum-
mer with a Ministry of
Culture and Recreation
grant.
. Seven puppets were
featured in the Goderich act.
which was performed Friday
at Victoria Public School and
again Saturday at Point
Farms Provincial Park.
One puppet is blind, one is
deaf, one is mentally.
retarded and one has
cerebral palsy. Their
dialogues attempt to dispel'
old myths about disabled
persons. Unlike most puppet
shows, the lights are left on
and children can see the
puppeteers at work-.
Following the per-
formance on Friday, the
older children were invited
to stay for a workshop. And
Shawn . Thomson of
Goderich, who has cerebral
palsy, delighted in meeting
the puppet with cerebral
palsy
"I love you," he told the.
CP puppet from the
audience.
Next Wednesday, July 15
at 2 p.m. at Victoria School,
another puppet troupe will
visit. The Puppetmongers
Powell, a Canadiain puppet
troupe which has played all
over the world to rave
reviews, will perform for the
children. Admission is 50
cents.

Employment
up 57 per cent
Good news during this
time of strikes, lay-offs and
high inflation is that student
employment in this area is
up 57 per cent as compared
to June of 1980.
Recent figures from the
Canada Employment Centre
for Students office located in
Goderich reveal that ap-
proximately 537 students
have been placed in various
jobs. Of these 537, 408 have
regular jobs and 129 are
doing casual labor such as
painting, grass cutting and
haying.
The increase in the
number of job openings for
students in the area this year
is attributed to favorable
weather . for outside labor,
particularly agriculturally -
related work. Also, a lot of
advertising and promotion
has been undertaken to
encourage householders and
employers to hire a student,
even if it's for a day, a week
or a month.
Despite this, there are still
490 students in the Goderich
area and 211 in the Exeter
area seeking employment.
Both Joni Thompson and the
new student placement of-
ficer, Audrey Vandenheuvel
would like to encourage
anyone needing a willing and
helping hand, to contact
therii at the Canada
Employment Centre about
hiring some - of these
students.
Give a student a chance to
work for you this summer—
you'll be glad you did!
