The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-07-15, Page 9Selinger Wood team defeats
powerful SignaLS.tar Paper Leafs
Last Monday, the
slowpitch game of the week
featured the cellar -dwelling
Selinger Wood team from C
division against the always
powerful Signal -Star Paper
Leafs in A.
Was it to be • a dull
mismatch - a night to pad the
averages? Not. so! As the
"fans cheered and the gloves
flew into the air, you knew
that Selinger had just pulled
off the "upset of the year"
an 8-7 victory over the Leafs.
Were the Leafs overconfi-
dent; was it the hot, humid
weather, were they jinxed or
were they just beat? ,
After playing icore1.'s
ball m the first, Selinger
jumped out to a 3-0 lead in
the second on hits by Carson
Milley, Gary Hakkers,
Bruce Carrick and Bob Bur-
roughs_ The Leafs took the
lead in the top of the third as
Dave Sykes, Brian
Eickmeyer, Brian Thomp-
son and Don Hubick scored
on hits by Paul Steep, Dick
and George Vanderburgh. In
the bottom of the third, Jim
Carrick homered with
Gerald Nicholson on base to
give Selingver a 5-4 lead.
Leafs tied it in the fourth
as Tom Thompson scored on
hits by Don Johnston and
Brian Eickmeyer. George
Vanderburgh put the leafs
ahead in the fifth as he
scoed on hits by Dick
Va derburgh and Paul
Stee . A controversial in-
field fly call kept Selinger
close and seemed to throw
the Leafs off stride.
With two out in the bottom
of the fifth, Selinger's bats
came to life. Line shots in the
gap and- to the wrong field'
allowed Bob Burroughs,
Gord Chapman and Bob Sel-
inger to score, giving Sel-
ingers an 8-6 lead.
Tom Thompson, scored for
the Leafs irfthe sixth to nar-
row the score, but a fired -up
Selinger team playing
perhaps its best • defensive
game of the season shut the
Leafs down in the seventh to
clinch the victory.
Team spokesman for Sel-
inger, Bob Buiroughs made
special mention of the
outstanding game played by
Doug Dougherty and Don

Defeat London
BYJED DEJONG
Goderich United. "A"
team, on a late goal by Brian
Allen, defeated London
Calabria 2-1, last Sunday. in
London. .
United played their best
game of the year, . and the
result was a hard-earned
victory, to which every
sii g e United player gave 100
per cent for the full 90
.minutes. The win boosted
r United's record to five wins,
two losses and two. ties..
The game featured good
ball control by both teams,
although. United did have the
upper hand as far as con-
trolling the play.
United drew first blood,' in
the first half, approxitna'ely
20 . minutes into play. Karl
Krohmer, after a two-week
lay 'off, returned from the
"old country" to set up the
first goal. .
United's Paul Donnelly
gained- control of the ball in
the midfield. He there passed
off to .Krohner and put a
lead pass to Lee Arbour. The
Calabrian keeper came out,
thinking that he could 'beat
Arbour, however, Arbour
turned on `the jets', got to the
hall first, and sent a low,
hard shot into the near side.
of the goa 1.
Ten minutes later,
Calabria tied it up, on a shot
that was °blasted from 25
yards out, pasta diving Greg
Smith, Unitedkeeper.:
United then started ,to
press Calabria and con-
tinued to do so for the rest of
the first half and throughout
the second half,. although
Calabria did have a few
chances. These were all th-
warted by United's defen-
ders, who played their best
game as a unit.
United had two or three
chances to score, but just as
it seemed they were on the
brink of having a try, the
referee would blow it dead
for what appeared to be
questionable calls. .
Two minutes from the end
of time, United, got the
winning goal; and a well-
deserved one it was too!
United's defender, Bill '
Walters, cleared an errant
Calabrian pass to Mark
Bellinger. Bellinger headed
the ball past a Calabrian
defender • right onto Brian
"Crazy .Legs" Allen; who
made an excellent outside
fake, pivoted and sent the
ball home, low and hard
inside the near post, for the
victory. • •
Paul' Donnelly, Karl. Kroh -
mer and Greg Smith were
standouts for -United, but.the
whole team exhibited fine
play, for a fine victory.

McDougall. The victory
moves Selinger into a playoff
position which will be added
incentive during the final leg
of the schedule.
The Leafs were not the on-
ly team surprised by the
week's outcomes. The
Coyotes, with a chance to
take over second place in A
Division, blew it in a game
with Smith's Carpetbaggers.
Six of the first eight batters
for Smith's crossed the plate
before Coyotes got down to
serious ball playing. By then
it was too late. When the
stieks are dead, six runs is a
lot to make up. The win prov-
ed to be a big one as it moved.
