And for the second year in a row, the Mitchell Grizzlies came away second best. The Mitchell BPs used the long ball ttf build up a lead and then lung on to deafeat the Grizzlies 6-5 and win the A division Championship of the Third Annual Goderich Men's Slowpitch Tour- namegt. The Grizzlies built up a 3-0 lead after one inning on a three -run homer by P. Chessell and appeared eager to avenge their 1980 final loss to the Mitchell Coyotes. The BPs battled back with a single run in the second on a Don Vipond homer and Vipond capped a five -run fourth inning outburst with a three -run shot. The Grizzlies chipped away scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings bit were unable to mount a serious threat in the final innings. In their opening round game the BPs disposed of the Goderich Coyotes 12-2 Saturday and later in the day they edged the Port Albert Bulldogs4l. They , continued their winning ways Sunday hammering Lueknow 13-4 in the quarter finals and they reached the final with a tough 10-9 decision over their league rivals, Mitchell 'Mitchell BP captain Charlie Robertson accepted the Labatt's championship trophy after the BPs defeated the Mitchel Grizzlies 6-5 in the A division final Sunday. The Coyotes in the semi-finaLThe victory also ended any hopes the Coyotes had of repeating as tournament champions. The Grizzlies opened the tournament defeating Pine River 22-6 and recorded their second win over Signal -Star Paper Leafs, 7-1, on Saturday. Carlow Country wins over 30 division Fourty teams participated in the third annual slowpitch tournament in three divisions over three days. The tournament is sponsored by the .18 -team Goderich men's Slowpitch League: Fourth straight victory T Bookies winB division The Wingham B and T Bookies overcame a five -run first inning deficit to eventually shade Meneset Mobile Park 8-7 and win the B Division championship of • the. Goderich Men's Slowpitch Tournament. The win was the fourth straight victory of the :tournament for Wingham after they dropped their opening game to Wallaceburg 14.6. Meneset appeared to have the Bookies in a hole, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first inning. But Wingham pecked away at the lead, while holding Meneset -off the score sheet, to take an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh. With two out in the Bridge scores On July 7, the Bridge Club had eight tables in play in a Mitchell game. In north -south play, Eleanor Erskine and Mary Donnelly had the high score with 102 points; Pat Stringer and Cathy McDonald had 98 points; Jean Cook and Verna Worthy had 90, and Joanne Duckworth and Lee Ryan had 88.5 points. In the east -west ' com- petition, Father Garvey and Frank Donnelly had the high score of 114.5 points; Carol and Howard MacDonald had 109; and Helen Gardiner and Audrey Tobin were tied with Mr. and 'Mrs. Costello with 81:5 points. Carlow Coin try exploded for 16 runs in the sixth inning to erase atwo-run deficit and defeat Stratford MP 184 to win the over 30 division -of the Goderich Men's Slowpitch Tournament Sunday. • Stratford held a two -run lead heating into the sixth inning but the . Carlow of- fence rallied with a 16 -run outburst on nine hits, eight Stratford errors and a walk. The rally took the sting out of Stratford's attack and they went down meekly in their final two at bats. • Mike Redmond and Harry Kerr led the Carlow. assault with four hits apiece and they scored two runs each. Twelve of the Carlow runs came after there was two ants. • Carlow opened the tour- nament Saturday with a 10-3 win over Hohnesville. Bruce .Sillib nailed a homer for the winners and Bull Melick led the offence with three hits •whlle Harry and G. Kerr chipped in with two hits apiece. Carlow Country reached the final with a 14-5 victory over the Goderich Firemen in the semi-final. Don Sowerby led the winners three hits in four trips to the plate. Stratford reached the final with an opening round 7-5 win over Sebringville and they nipped Nile 11-10 in the semi-final The .. Goderich Oldtimers took the consolation side of the over 30 division with a 14- 4 44 win over the Cobras in the final. The Oldtimers led 5-0 after two innings, and punt the me away with a seven -run rally in the fifth.
