ptimists overpower Garb and Gear team in sl
The slopitch game of the
week proved to be a dull
affair (biased opinion) as the
OptiinistF• overpowered a
shaky Garb and Gear team,
coming away with a 13 - 5
victory.
The Optimist team jumped',
in. front quickly as Mark
Jones, Dan Demers and Bill
Lewis combined for two
runs. Garb and Gear came
back in the second and third,
taking a 4 - 3 lead. on runs
scored by Bill Worsell, Bill
Rahbek, Tom Kelly and
Larry Madge. The two teams
swapped a few runs in the
fourth and. fifth with the
Optimists holding a 7 - 5 lead
going into their half of the
sixth. That's when the flood
gates opened. The usually
reliable infield of Garb and
Gear couldn't stop a beach
ball in that inning and
Optimists came away with
;six .unearned runs. Garb and
Gear has never been known
for their strong -bats and the
eight -run disadvantage
proved to be too much to
overcome.
The. Optimists, 'a young
energetic team under the
leadership of Dave Young
appear to be improving with
every game -- or maybe it
just seems that way to us
older fella!! The victory
moved them into a fourth
place tie with the W heelsnen
in B division.

Midget girls win two, lose one
The Goderich MidgetGirls
showed some awesome
batting skills in defeating
Ripley 13-11 and .22-17 : and
Harriston 22-10 before
cooling off against Durham
by dropping a 10-2 decision.
In their'; initial defeat Of
Ripley, the girls .fell behind
7-2 after two innings before
scoring four runs in the top of
the fifth. Ripley countered
with a single run but
Goderish scored three in the
sixth to lead by a run. Ripley
again took the lead with
three runs in their half of the
sixth
Then things got a little
hectic. Down by a run -with
two out, the girls rallied for
three runs to take, the lead
and they heldon to win.
Theresa Osborne, Terrilyn
Fisher and Andy Dewinter
had.:three hits apiece while
Susan Bell, Teresa Donnelly
and Mary O'Neil had two hits
each. One of O'Neil's hits
was a home runs Susan Bell
pitched a strong game in her
first outing .of the year.
The second game against
Ripley Vas a' repeat of the
first as the girls fell behind
early. with poor fielding and
errors but kept the score
close with impressive hit-
ting. Trailing 17-10 in ,the
sixth, they exploded for 12
runs on nine hits while
sending 16 batters to the
plate. The shell-shocked
Ripley team bowed out
quietly in the seventh. •

I seem to be having an
awful time getting to the golf
coursethis year. I couldn't
wait for the weather to warm
-up, and now that A here
(well at times. - between fog
and rain we do get some
warmth) I seem to have too
much to do. Last week I even
missed ladies' night with a
bad case of the flu' - which is
i of very nice and I hope none
of you get it. Anyway my
holidays are coming up and I
intend to spend a lot of time
on the course.
Men's night June 30th

gross winner of • the evening
while Marcel Richard was
the low net winner.

June
Leading the 17 -hit assault
was Deb .Mitchelmore with
five safeties. ' Leslie Rean
had four. hits and Andy
Dewinter three, including a
home run. Theresa Osborne
nailed a three -run homer in
. the sixth and Sue Bell picked
up the win allowingnineliits.
' In their defeat of
Harriston; Goderich broke
from the' gate early scoring
20 runs in, the first three
innings and coasting to the
victory. The girls pelted out
28 hits and Mitchelmore
again led the, attack with
four hits while playing only
half the game. Bell also had
four hits while. Fisher,
DeWinter, Donnelly; Rean
and O'Neil/ had' three.
Osborne chipped in with a
homer and Bell picked up .
her third straight win of.the.
week.
The girls' streak came to
an end when they ran into .a
strong pitcher from
Durham. The girls only
managed three hits and 11
went down swinging, Mit-
chelmore, O'Neil and
Dewinter had the Goderich
hits. Mitchehnore allowed
only eight hits but .surren-
dered eight walks in the loss.
The inidget's record .now
stands at six wins and"three
losses. Their next . game is
Sunday at. 1.30 p.m. against
Mildmay:
According to the manager
for Garb and Gear„ -who, for
good reason, wishes to
remain anonymous, their
team once again displayed
the potential to lose the game
that they shouldn't. Unless
that can be overcome, they
are destined for a change in
divisional status next year.
Elsewhere in the league,
Firemen edged Wheelsmen
10 - 8, Coyotes over Old-
timers 19 - 17, Wheelsmen
defeated Renegades 12 -.4,
and Tickers dropped two this
week ; 21-11 to Carlow and a
23-1 mercy by Pbrt Albert.
Oldtimers dumped
Blyewater 17 -4, Cobras over
Optimists by a score of 15 -4
and Garb and Gear defeated,
Cobras 9 - 4 - I just don't
understand the results in this
league.
Carlow, after reading the
article in last week's paper,
promptly lost two games this
week. Oldtimers took over
first place by defeating
Carlow 15 - 5 and Firemen
defeated them 7 - 3.
Smiths, held to only 18 runs
in the seventh inning
defeated Champco, 31 8.
• Smiths also defeated 1863 by
a score of 16 - 5.
Next week, the Slopitch
game of the week will
feature the Signal Star
Paper Leafs against Seling.
