Graduation -night tinged with sadness
Mr. Jewitt, guests,
teachers, parents and fellow
graduates:
Tonight we meet under
most happy circumstances -
tinged perhaps with a touch
of sadness. We are a group of
friends, fellow graduates,
meeting together with our
instructors and parents. All
of this is quite happy, yet this
is the last occasion at which
we students will all be
present. This certainly adds
a not of sadness.
I remember my first day
of school: I came to kin-
dergarten crying because I
didn't know anybody and
now I'm going, crying
because I know lots of people
and don't want to leave
them! Many of my ex-
periences
xperiences will not let me
forget my years ' at
Brookside.
I remember the week
before Grade 5. I was
terrified to have my first
male tacker. I'm not sure
why I was so petrified. He
turned out to be just as nice
as the lady teachers.
One year a bunch of hs
decided we'd have a chalk
fight. It started out quite
innocently, but after about
five minutes it really started
getting hectic. Much to our
surprise, we were caught in
the act by our teacher who
angrily spat, "I'll see people
at last recess." Of course all
involved sat on picS' and
needles with visions of a
month of indoor recesses on
our minds. Finally last
recess came, and after
everyone else had left the
teacher asked us what had
happened. We told her and
she' started to laugh I guess
her sense of humor won over.
We were let off very easily,
our only punishhihent was
leaning the chalk off the
curtains. What a relief!
We came to school
knowing the basic things -
walking, talking, writing our
name and counting to ten.
Now we are learning with so
much more than that. Not
just an excellent store of
knowledge, but being able to
associate with other fpeople
and cope with Me in today's
world.
When looking back at our
years at Brookside, we will
be sure to remember best,
perhaps, our friends. Those
buddies sure cam in handy in
many situatiohs
If it weren't for friends -
who would lend you ' their
notebook when you didn't get
your homework done? Who
would whisper the answer to
you when the teacher asked
you a question and you were
off in wonderland. Who
would share their lunch with
you when you forgot yours?
To whom would you tell the
mark of your last geography
test? Who would send you a
hand -made get -well -soon
card when you were side at
home? -
I'm sure all of us have
been faced with these
problems and I know you'll
agree with me, "friends are a
necessity.
My speech wouldn't be
complete without men-
tioning some people who
played very important roles
throughout our years at
Brookside.
We could always depend

on our custodian, Mr.
Wilkins to keep the school
spic and span at all times. If.
you needed any help. with
decorating he was always
willing to help. Mr. Blake;
who acted as secretary, also
went beyond the caIl of duty
to assist us.
Mr. Jewitt, our principal,
must be about the most
patient man Iknow. Hone of
us had a problem he would
do his best to try and solve it.
Also a special'thanks goes
to the school board for their
assistance through the
years. We are indebted to
them for supplying the needs
of our school to help keep it
working.
Bymaking sure our
homework was finished,
helping us study r for tests,
and encouraging us to keep
trying, our parents in-
fluenced our school life
greatly. Most of all; we'd like
to thank the teachers, who
are about as proud of us as
we are of them. They have
tried to teach us everything
we should know, and at the
same time devote as much'
kindness and patience as
they are able. -
I guess we can't blame
them for some of those "evil
eyes" many of us received
while misbehaving
In closing, I leave you with
this thought We graduate
tonight, but our places will
soon be filled by others; who
are just as eager, just as
anxious and just as deter-
mined to succeed. It is our
wish that all the valuable
experiences which have been
ours, will in due time be
theirs.
