The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-07-01, Page 16PAGE 6A -GODUH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 1981 Plays commissioned. *Trani page 1A [lover seen again after December 1919;. Like Quiet in the Land, Love or Money was artistic director Amos' idea. She had. beard.. vaguely of the story and contacted Bolt last January to research and write it. Bolt was working on another show at the time ` but began reading books and old newspaper articles about Small's mysterious disappearance and she came to 1lyth in June with a rough draft for a play. "This ismyfirst time at Blyth and I love it. The theatre is beautiful, the town is friendly and I can really concentrate on my work here...This play has been such a joy to Write andthe cast is very inspiring," shesays. Bolt didn't know anything about theatre in college but she was always interested in writing and received her -Bachelor of Arts Degree in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. She was involved with amateur'theatre for 10 years before writing her first professional play in 1970. This play, an epic drama about 17th century Quebec, was staged by Toronto Worskshop Productions and Bolt says it was `classically bad'. However, she didn't give Lip after this failure. Instead, she went on to write a review.. of .the thirties called. Next Year Country staged in Saskatchewan. It was a huge success and from it, sprung the play, Buffalo Jump perf ormed by Theatre Passe Murallle. One of Bolt's most well-known plays is One NightStand This play of suspense and horror about a woman who picks up a psychopath in a singles bar, has received ten major productions at theatres across Canada and was also produced as a film for television by CBC and Alan King Co - productions. In all, Bolt has written over 20 plays and several television scripts including one for CBC's Klondike series and another for CAC's Winners series. She has found the disappearance of Ambrose Small to make 'a wonderful story with fascinating details'. She explains that he owned a chain of theatres including the Grand in Toronto and the Grand in London which still stands. In 1919 he signed his theatres over for $1 million and $700,000 over the next five years, had a celebration with his wife, went to his office and disappeared. There are many theories about his disappearance. Some say he left to start a new life somewhere else. His body was never found and there were thousands of reports of him being seen all over the world Others say he was murdered. He had many enemies capable. of doing so and IL many people claini to have seen hiin as a ghost atthe Grand in London. Bolt- says she hopes to leave people wondering at the end. Ninety per cent of the events in the play are factual but the time has been collapsed from several years to two months, she explains. ° Besides being a thriller and a ghost story, the play is about character and also reveals something of the Orange -Catholic conflict present. in Toronto at the time of Small's disappearance. Love or Money reunites several elements that made another Blyth thriller, I'll Be Back For You Before Midnight, such a success. It is directed by the same man, Keith Batten. And Diana Belshaw and Anne Anglin who appeared in the 1980 version of Midnight also star in Love or Money. The cast is completed by Layne Coleman, Graham McPherson and Patricia Vanstonei Quiet in the Land will play in repertory at Blyth until August 1 and Love or Money until August 20.
