Stratford will hold its
annual Festival of Arts and
Crafts from Friday, July 10
to Sunday, July 12 in the
Stratford Arena.
The Festival was
established ten years ago by
the volunteer committee of
the Gallery -Stratford as a
fund-raising event to aid in
Gallery educational
programs.
This year 60 craftsperson
from Ontario and Quzs c,
e iiosen by a jiry for their.
outstanding quality of work,
will display and sell their
jewellry, leather and wood
crafts, textiles, pottery and
hung art.
The Festival opens on
Friday at noon until 10p.m.;
on Saturday from 10 am. to
10 p.m.; and on Sunday from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission
is $1. and children under 13
are admitted free:

held at the Playhouse. near
Grand Bend on Sunday,
August2.
This year's auction will
feature 1® works including
paintings, .drawings, prints,
sculpture and many other
forms of artistic expression.

least 10 percent of the pieces

offe&ed will be the work of
IocaT southwestern Ontario
artists.
In a departure from
previous auctions, the .works
will all be available for view-
ing
iewing by the general public at
no charge. The display will
be open from 3:30 to5p.m.
Large crowds are .ex-
pected to be in attendance on
August 2 as the theatre is
running its first "Challenge
•
Auction" during the after-
noon. Proceeds from both
auction events will be eligi-
ble for two for one grants
from the Wintario Challenge
Fund. The Playhouse has
targeted a fund-raising goal
of $333,333 over the neat
three years to obtain the
maximum $666',666 Wintario
grants. •
For those who plan to at-
tend the art auction and bid
on one. or more of the items,
admission will be $5 per per-
son. The 8 p.m. auction. is,,
preceded by a wine and
cheese reception beginning
at 6:30 p.m.
The auction will be con-
ducted for the Playhouse by
Thielson Galleries Inc. in

Knight in recognition of the
fact that he attained the
highest score of any
elementary student in Huron
County in the Gauss -
Mathematics Contest in 19814.

A 16 -year-old Goderich
youth, who pleaded guilty to
breaking nine globe maple
trees on The Square May 24,.
has been given a suspended'
sentence and placed , on
probation for two years. In
addition, he has been or-
dered to complete 250 hours
of community work with the
Town of Goderich.
Judge W.G. Cochrane
handed down the sentence in
provincial court on Monday.
Damage to the ,trees was
estimate d at $387.
Also on Monday, a
Goderich man was fined $100
in provincial court when he
pleaded guilty to theft
(shoplifting) from the A&P
store. The man was ap-
prehended by store security
on June 22.
Goderich police say that
during the past few months
there appears to have been
an increase in the number of
people being apprehended in
local stores for shoplifting.
The number' of adults and
juveniles apprehended is
about equal.
