(Jitn Fitzgerald photot An idea is born, a reality realized By Shelley McPhee 1t was just a little over a year ago when the headlines in the May 1, 1980 Clinton News -Record read, "Dutch Festival to be held." An idea had been born, and today that vision of an ex- citing, entertaining and eventful celebration in Clinton is a reality, As a way to thank the Dutch people for their years of support and devotion to the area, and as an unique attraction that could become another one of Clinton's mutual events, the local Business Association originated the Klompen Feest idea. Their plans quickly gained the support of the local merchants, area residents, and the Dutch community offered their help to make Klompen Feest, meaning wooden shoe festival, a grand replica of the authentic Dutch street celebrations. A committee of 18 people was set up and May of 1981 was decided upon for the first annual Klompen Feest celebrations to take place. The month of May was chosen for special reasons since it was during this same month in the year 1945 that Canadian forces freed Holland from the-daminating Nazi rule.
