Reflections on Holland,
the people, the country
Whenever I go to Holland. ! feel at once that I have reached
the apotheosis of bourgeois• society. The food. the comfort,
the cleanliness, the kindliness. the sense of age and stability.
the curious mixture of beauty and bad taste. the orderliness
of everything including even nature and the sea - all this
makes one realize that here on the :Shore of the dyke -
controlled Zuider Zee one has found the highest
manifestation of the complacent civilization of the middle
classes. -Leonard Woolf, quoted in The light In Holland. by
Anthony Bailey.
