The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-03-25, Page 34PAGE 12A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1981 Round 'n About I don't Mow if you are in- terested in what is happen- ing regarding Highway 75 here in Florida, but it is nearly completed. It is to open right through to Naples by early May,So for anyone driving down, 1 it will help a lot, We recently spent a long weekend in Fort Meyers with our friends from Sar- nia. We just missed the "Swamp -Buggy" races which are a .great after- noon's entertainment. This ear they were run the same • with the Fort Meyers Celebration of Light. This is Edison's hometown. My friend Chistine is one of those people who has always "wanted to paint" and last year I made her start - which is the first step. It was hard to believe that she could do so well on her first. paintings, but it just goes to prove my point you can DO it if you just get started. She had been a bit discouraged because the teacher she has at their mobile park spends most of the tiine"with those who can already paint - which really hurts the, newies. So we painted up a storm and 1 thinkshe will have more con- fidence in herself now, And I feel good too, because I could help her. This is one thing we should ALL do -. help others, willing- ly, learn whatever craft we know. So many people are jealous of someone seeing how they do THEIR thing. I could never understand this and we knew that many crafts have become obsolete or lost completely because someone didn't want to help another person to learn "THEIR" art er crnft. In the Bible story of the TALANTS I have always thought of them as "TALENTS" and eachof us has a few. If we don't help others learn them then we are "hiding our talents under the basket" or whatever and it is a SIN - I think. So while learning • I'm still taking lessons ® I'm also helping others: I have a new lady, here in this park, started recently, So I am en- joying it and keeping out of mischief: Last week son Doug and I went aloft in his plane and spent an hour looking OVER Record number of people take embroidery course What's exciting enough to make 1,000 people stop their normal day-to-day routines? It is fan- tastic. One has no conception of the size of a city or a harbour or the farrg►ing area unless they can go and see it from above. Most people couldn't care less, but I believe if one was about to buy property in a new part of the country should also see it from ABOVE to really know what he is getting. For a few years we stayed not far from Port Charlotte - a "town"' as I thought of it by what I had seen and I wasn't too impressed. But since seeing it from the air, . have said "unbelievable". The city has miles and miles of property, streets - everything laid out - ready to sell, besides the vast sec- tions of the built-up proper- ° ty. And the harbour -from the map it is just a squiggle in the coastline - is miles and Miles wide and the Myaka River is much mightier than I had thought. Another fairly large river - The Peace - runs into this harbour and recently, Doug, Madeline and young Jack took a canoe trip starting to Arcadia' and travelled down river, stopping once for a picnic, to a place where they and the canoe were picked up and returned to -the star= ting point • and their car. $o that was a nice outing for them and I, too, enjoyed see- ing their river -trip from above - how it twists and turns, looked like the Maitland back home. Arcadia was a surprise, too - it is only 35-40 miles from where we live here, but as many times as we have been to the rodeo in Arcadia (and itis a good one with big crowds) I thought this was a very small town. Not so, it is a large reaching area, sit- ting on solid ground - the sur- rounding area is full of holes! You don't see them from the ground - but from above the countryside is beautiful with thousands of beautiful HOLES - all the shades of GREEN you can think of. The shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico is also GREEN - green from the faintest yellow -green to deep blue- green. It is something to see. The trees, bushes and flowers are recovering from the frost damage - up home we, just call this WINTER - but here so many of the trees are killed. The bright spots are some red maple trees - the leaf is maple all right, but the light colored bark of the ° tree is making me wonder what family it is. Before the frost of January, the'orchid trees were bloom- ing. Now there are few blooms anywhere, So many have to be cut down or dug out. 'My art teacher has a peach tree (scarce here) which loved the cold and is now showing lots of peaches. My coleus bushes are all dead and there are just ferns left in the planter. A root of the morning glory is alive with Martha Rathburn and starting to climb again. Right now the art and craft shows are everywhere, I'm helping in one in a couple of weeks. I don't know if I men- tioned it but I .have the "stolen" bike back. No lite or mirror, a broken wheel and two tires ruined, but we're glad to have it back.1 never exPected to seeit again but the kids played ,with them, then after break- ing things, dumped the six in the park lake. Well 6:20 a,m. - the first bird squawked the alarm - I still don't know who he is, but some day —. A mock- ingbird has a nest somewhere close by - how they sing!
