Students participate, in exchange prograrn
The students of the Grade 5 and 6 class at
Robertson Memorial School are par-
ticipating m a type of exchange program
with their counterparts in Brandon,
Manitoba without leaving their rieskc
The students, under the direction of
teacher John Scratch, are avidly involved in
the IODE Mailbox. Canada project that links
elementary school children across Canada
through correspondence projects. Scratch
explained that previous attempts at cor-
responding with schools in Newfoundland
and Nova Scotia failed before a willing part-
ner was found in Brandon.
Through Mailbox Canada, the studentsin
both communities are corresponding on a
regular basis, getting to know each other
personally and offering personalized im-
pressions of their communities and lifestyle.
' Last week the Robertson students com-
pleted projects, in teams of twos and threes,
highliting the historical, industrial andcojm.-
mercial capabilities of the town. The
students explored salt mining, grader
manufacturing, nuclear energy and the
many tourist attractions tri the area in essay
form with accompanying visual aids.
Scratch said the program is a leiter and
scrapbook exchange between the students
detailing lifestyle.
"Brandon is a prairie city and there are
many differences compared to a port town,"
he said. "Many of the students in Brandon
have probably never seen a lake freighter
and the , water commerce aspect was a
popular project among my class."d
. The Grade 5 and 6 class at Robertson,
through Mailbox Canada, are making new
friends, leanung about life :in the prairies
and becoming learned ambassadors for the
town of Goderich.
