More swine testing done
Ontario ROP swine
breeders enrolled in
Program A and Program B
tested a record total of 40,149
boars and gilts in 1980. This
number represents more
than 38 percent of the total
tested in Canada.
This total of home and
station tested pigs is a sharp
increase of 24.1 percent over
the 24,621 animal's tested in
1979.
The number of boars and
gilts home tested by
breeders in Program A in-
creased rapidly with a total
of 37,767 boars and gilts
representing a 33 percent
increase over the previous
year.
The number of boars
tested at the ROP Test
Station in New Hamburg
totalled 1,307 - a slight
decrease from the 1,318
station tested the previous
year.
Program A, designed for
swine , breeders producing
.1reeding stock for public
sale, consists of a home test
of boars 9 nd gilts and a

are not selling breeding
stock but who are interested
in using the information for
electing superior herd
replacements.
The average backfat
thickness of both boars and
gilts continued to decrease in
1980, Since the home per-
formance testing program
was initiated in Ontario in
1967, the average backfat
thickness of swing breeding
stock tested has decreased
dramatically. For example,
the average backfat
thickness of home tem
boars has decreased from
21.8 nm(0.86 in.) in 1967 to
only 13.8 mm (0.54) in 1980, a
total decrease of 8 mm (0.32
in.).
Station tested boars and
home tested gilts have also
shown a similar decrease in
backfat thickness.
In 1980 boars tested at the
ROP Swine Test Station near
New Hamburg had the best
overall performance since
the station testing of boars
commenced in 1972. Backfat
thickness averaged 13.6 mm
(0.53), average daily gain on
test averaged 0.83 kg (1.83
lb.) and average feed con-
version of 2.52 was the best in
nine years boars have been
station tested in Ontario.
Through the use of per-
formance information ob-
tained by ROP testing boars
and gilts, Ontario's swine
breeders have been very
successful in producing
breeding stock -that is
genetically mucleaner
than breeding stock
available in the later 1960s
and early 1970s.
By us1F-ig breeding stork
proven to be superior gn
ROP test, commercial pork
producers have steadily
increased the average
market index of the pigs they
produced. In 1980, the
average market index of
Ontario pigs was 102.6, an
increase of 102.3 in 1979.
Many commercial producers
who have been using a
succession of superior
peefeeinefiCe tested boars
have successfully increased
their average market index
to well over 105, which can
make a big difference in
returns when compared to
the avera ge producer.
