Offer`
incentives
• The federal government
_ should immediately offer
new . incentives .. to 'help `"
• • homeowners cope with cur- •
rent high interest rates, the
newly -elected President of
the • Ontario .Real .• Estate
Association said today.
Robert Pedler warned
Prime . Minister TrudeauT_, -
Canada
that ,the housing industry in .
Canada . must 'mit become
another Chrysler, In aletter
-- -to- the- -Prime--Minister-;- ,
Pedler indicated • that , the
• government should move
immediately to freeze mor-
tgage interest rates on all
-primary residences at no
more than 12 percent.
He also called, on the
government to ,re-evaluate
the concept of mortgage in-
terest deductibility. on 'in-
come tax.
"Home ownership is no -
longer- a luxury, it's, a
burdensome • penalty... in-
come tax deductibility is no
longer a perk, it's a necessi-
ty," Pedler said.
The letter was sent to the'
Prime Minister immediately
after Pedler, a Windsor area
real estate broker, took of-
fice as President of the 24,000
member organization.
Pedler warned the Prime
Minister that although the
Association recognizes the
external economic pressures
on the federal government
and realizes that govern-
ment policy is seeking to
boost the Canadian dollar
and attract foreign invest-
ment, his policies are
"mutilating (the
homeowners') pocketbook."
To guard against property
speculators, Pedler suggests
that the freeze on mortgage
interest rates apply only to
primary residences:
The Ontario Real Estate
Association represents more
.than 80 percent of all
licensees in 48 local real.
estate boards across On-
tario.
Add
chlorine
WINGHAM - The ministry of
the environment is again
calling for Wingham to add
more chlorine to its water
supply.
However, the PUC,
mindful of the public
displeasure over the bleach
odor produced by higher
concentrations of the
chemical, is going slowly on
the re commendation.
While there is no
suggestion of a health hazard
from the water, the ministry
wants the chlorine level
raised to clear up a problem
of higher concentrations of
iron in the water causing
"excessive color and tur-
bidity."
PUC manager Ken Saxton,
noting recent reports that
link chlorine to cancer, said
there is always some risk.
"Either you get disease from
impure water, or cancel
from chlorine."
