London symphony rets
`bravo' from director'
BY BLAIN SMITH
On Wednesday, February
17, the London Symphony
Orchestra again visited
Goderich. Jerome Summers
was the conductor and
Michael White, principal se-
cond., violinist of the or-
chestra was the featured
soloist.
Thexprogram was varied;
containing works by
Beethoven, Handel,
Vaughan -Williams, Turner,
and one of Canada's
foremost arrangers and
composers, Howard Cable.
The Turner "A Children's
Overture" began the concert
on a light playful mood,
especially in fast sections.
As the concert progressed,
the tuning problems,
especially among the wood-
winds, disappeared and the
orchestra adjusted to the
acoustics of North Street
1...'0...7 lR.......b.
v7u Wu a7ua c77.
The flow of the music was
punctuated many times by
-some fine brass playing,
notably the very sym-
pathetic French horn
obligato behind the strings in
Elgar's "Chanson de N uit et
Matin" and the whole brass
ensemble in Ridout's
"Frivolites Canadiennes".
Michel White,the violins`
soloist, was much more "at`
home" with his second
number than he was in the
-Beethoven which was unfor-
tunate because the orchestra
played excellently in this
number.
In, general, the London or-
chestra played much more
musically, were more relax-
ed and generally had fun
making music the musical
period from Beethoven to
Howard Cable.
For mkv tuts, the "F.nealich
Folk Song Suite" by
Vaughan -Williams is much
better left for performance
by a concert band or wind
ensemble; it suits that
musical medium much bet-
ter than symphony or-
chestra.
The 'Howard Cable ar-
rangement of "Songs of the
Seventies" was a rousing
and fitting number to end the
concert. It left the audience
with a smile on their face
their feet tapping and many
singing along.
Bravo Mr. Summers for a
fine concert and we look for-
ward to the return of the
London Symphony Or-
chestra on Friday, April 24
once again at North Street
United Church."
