The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-03-18, Page 5Letters to the editor The Bibie says it; he beieves it; that settles it Dear Editor : ,- This is in reply to the let- ters by Mr. Dave B. Cloet, Mr. Minaker, M4 Martie Foster, and Iva J. Wood, dealing, with the current debtdte on the Evolution issue. All of these people would be very interested to know that the origin of life was the subject of the debate before a paid audience of approx- imately 1,500 held on the evening of Wednesday, .Oc- tober, 22, 1981 in the C. Y. Stevens. Auditorium of Iowa State University. The debate was arranged by Students for Origins Research, an I.S.U. crea- tionists organization headed by, Jbhn Meyer.. Participants were Dr. Duane Gish and Dr. Russell Doolittle, who holds a Ph.D in biochemistry from Harvard University and 'is Professor of Biochemistry at the University of California at San Diego. The moderator was Richard Hudson, the Forensics Debate Coach at I:S.U. Each debater was given an initial presentation of 60 minutes and a 15 minute and 54minute rebuttal, the in- itial order being determined by the flip of a coin. Dr. Gish, the first speaker, maintained that a naturalistic, evolutionary origin of life is impossible. Thus, the only alternative = the special creation of life by an intelligent creator - is the only answer. ,Using thermodynamic principles and the laws of probability, Dr. Gish presented evidence which he contended showed that not even a single complex molecule, such as DNA, RNA or protein could have arisen spontaneously on the hypothetical primitive - earth. Chemical, ther- r>:lpdynamic and kinetic data showed that no significant quantity of even relatively simple organic molecules, Give the theory of creation equal time Dear Editor: In reply to Mr. Cloets' letter, I realize that he has to comply. with the curriculum prescribed by . the Depart- ment of Education. I am sure by now he can sympathize with those who are on the receivingendof prosecution,: and he also 'has the inborn desire, as everyone has, to defend himself: , In other words, he is a human being, even though he does have a tendency to support the . theory of evolution, as he himself says. ' My criticism was directed' specifically toward , the Department of . Education, whom • I believe are responsible for the in: troduction of . the evolution theory at the pre -university level. I believe the evolutionists have been proving the bible for the past one hundred years, or more. As stated in the bible, if one has faith, mountains can be moved, as found in Matt. Chapter 17 Verse 20. The good Lord knows, I say with reverence, how many mountains of dirt have been moved over the years by people looking for evidence of the missing link, whichihe bible says isn't there. Since man was created in the image of God, the missing link they were looking -for must have been on the. .other --end --of...the. shi4rel. i believe that I have established the faith that the evolutionists have, so therefore it can be classifed &s--a,religir.,My-qmstions now is, why have they been hiding under the skirts of science and using the sup- port by money from tax- payers who do not believe in their religion? • It would seem only fair in my mind that they would establish a church of their own, and let the ones .who believe' in this religion support . it. Either,, that, or give the theory of creation equal time in the schools. The bible was not written after Christ as stated by Mr. Cloet. The old Testament was written prior to His birth, and - the . new was written after. BENJAMIN ruFILM LABORATORIES LTD. We use Kodak paper, for the good look. Sincerely, N.J. Minaker such as amino acids, could havearisen spontaneously under hypothetical primor- dial ' earth conditions. He closed by pointing out that no life of any kind had been detected on Mars or the ,moon. This was contradic- tory to evolutionary expecta- tions. Dr. Doolittle began his presentation by asking those in the audience who were convinced that life had arisen by evolution to stand up. No more than 10 percent responded.. Doolittle then presented an evolutionary view , of the origin, of the universe, beginning'" with "mysterious forces" which control the universe and con- tinuing through, the hypothetical `•`Big Bang" start of the universe, the origin of stars, and finally culminating in the origin of life. Doolittle argued that there was no difficulty producing considerable quantities of amino acids ` and other-. substances. He showed a hypothetical cycle involving "activated" nucleotides, a polypeptide catalys, a coded polynucleotide template, and "activated" amino acids. He said that later gene duplication led to greater diversity. Doolittle also at- tempted to counter Gish's probability of all 2,000 of us being here in this auditorium tonight the odds would seem to be impossible, and yet here'we were! In his rebuttal, Dr. Gish pointed out that the 2,000 people would never have been there if their presence had depended on chance (as does evolution) , but were there precisely because they did not get there by chance!. Each had made his way to the auditorium deliberately! Gish pointed out that chemists can obtain signifi- cant quantities of amino acids and similar products - only by the use of a trap to isolate the products, since the rates. of destruction of the products by the energy sources that produced them exceed the rates of forma- tion; by a millionfold _ and more. Even ..if a trap were available on the hypothetical primordial earth, this would also be fatal since no energy would thus be available to promote the next step up the ladder. Dr. Gish asserted also that the , roduction of "activated" aMino acids and nucleotides would have been excluded under primordial earth conditions (ATP and other phosphorylated substances of for the synthesis' of activated com- pounds are very unstable to.. water), and that Doolittle's scheme simply assumed the existence of a protein en- zyme and a polynucleotide template -rather than ex- plaining their origin in the first place. 0 A spirited,,though cordial, exchange between' the debaters continued during a question -and -answer period which lasted for an addi- tional 45 minutes. The Students for Origins Research is- hopeful_ that - this debate will help to create a new perspective' concerning the creation -evolution ques- tion. On the I.S.U. campus, professors have dismissed students (later reinstated after administrative action) for their. creationist posi Election act is obsolete Dear Editor, With another provincial election on the 19th and an obsolete election act as far as.:ba.11ots-are-.concerned, -we-- are faced with the fad that many candidates will be elected .with less than 50 percent of the electoral support, - In. a recent federal elec- tion, using the same type of ballot, we found that there was a candidate elected with 12,322 votes while 22,254 opposed his election (the latter amount being split betwee n five candidates). Some other examples are: 19,756 ballots °(elected) - 29,967 ballots (opposed - between four candidates); 13,610 ballots (elected) - 26;373 ballots (opposed - between six candidates); and 11,619 ballots (elected) - 23,904 ballots (opposed - between two candidates ). . These examples certainly indicate (Democracy defeated by The Ballot). It will be noted that when Australia evolved a multi- party system hire Canada's, it adopted a preferential . (signal -transferrable ballot) to ensure . that the winner would be ' the preferred choice -of -electorate. - It willbe noted as . well, that in the opening of Federal Parliament, . the speech from the Throne -indinatacf --the receQ ity--i. electoral ieform. - We know that countries like Nicaragua, Venezuela, El Salvador, 'and many othets,.,which are the trouble spots in the world today are places where the govern- ments are supported by less than the majority of the electorate. In view of the strife, turmoil and blood shed, I can see that in another 30 .years, if . this situation is not taken care of our country will be in a similar condition. This type of balloting is not new in Canada. It was in- stituted on a provincial basis in both British Columbia and Alberta and for a number of years they had good government This was. disposed of in both provinces lin the 50s by. Social Credit governments. The reason at thetime was weakness 'in party strength and so they reverted --back to -the.. system of a simple pluralityballot.. When one looks at those countries in turmoil and -looks ahead to the !bil;tiea.. of. _ this. chap,— peal .. in.Canada, one would have to assume that political Strategists that oppose reform in this area are little short of being treasonous. Due to the experiences of those two provinces; I see the necessity of having the electoral system handled in such .a way in . the con- stitution that . no federal, provincial, ;nunieipal er school board representatives could ever sit in any of the elected offices without • a clear majority of electoral support. It is hoped thatthe readers of this article will demand from the caihjidates in their constituencies their support in electoral reform.
