Good sense to look of ter - mecha calinner _ _.s

LYNN TODGHAIVI
Cars are an expensive in-
vestment. Therefore, it
makes good sense to look
after the mechanical innards
and protect the outer shell
too, by regular washing and
Canada's national
rustproofing code, aside
from setting out respon-
sibilities of manufacturers to
improve rust prevention,
also contains advice for con-
sumers on how to clean a
car. Some of the tips in-
clude:
1. During the summer,
wash your car once a week in
the shade. Clean the under•
side, at the very least, once
during and once after the
winter, to prevent salt
buildup.
2. Start by loosening up the .
dirt wit)) a jet of water.
Rinse the entire car, then
wash off the dirt with a
sponge.
3. Use a mild dish
detergent, or a specialized
car wash product; never use
laundry soaps, which are too
strong: Lukewarm water is
best; avoid hot water, par-
ticularly in the winter, when
contact with cold metal
could cause the paint to
nv-o nir
Rinse with clear water and
dry with a soft cloth or
chamois.
5. Use special cleaners to
remove bug 'or bird residue
and tar. The best wash job is
the one you do yourself.
Automatic car washes
remove surface dirt, but fail
to reach underneath the car.
They are a practical alter-
native for winter, washing,
provided the car is dried im-

Notches make voting for blind easier
A series of notches on
ballots used in the 32nd
Ontario General Election
will make it easier for
qualified voters who are
blind tocast their ballots
without special assistance.
Ballots used in Ontario
elections are printed in black
with each candidate's name
appearing in white. A white
circle to the right of the
candidate's name and along
the edge. -of -the.-ballot,. is
reserved for the- viler to
mark his or her choice.
To facilitate the blind
voter, a small notch has been
cut into the top edge at the
upper right-hand corner of
the ballot which will enable a
blind voter 'to properly align
the ballot face with 'the
circles on the right. A notch
has also been.cut beside each
white circle down the right
side of all ballots.
With candidates' names
printed alphabetically and
numbered, the blind voter
may have a friend or poll
official, read all the names in
order as they appear on the
ballot.
Those blind voters who
require other assistance
may apply to the Deputy
Returning Officer in the
polling place. The Deputy
Returning Officer, in ac-
cordance with the Ontario
Election Act, may also assist
To hold early polls
Three advance polls will
be held prior to normalpoll-
ing day on March 19 for On-
tario's 32nd general election.
Advance polling will be
carried out on March ,12,
March 144 and March 16 —
between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00
p.m. each day.
Advance polls are for the
convenience of qualified
voters whose names appear
on the polling lists for their
polling divisions and who ex-
pect to, be unable to vote on
election day. Voters are
reminded that they may use
any advance poll in their
electoral district.
They are located in places
offering level access or
ramps so that elderly or
physically handicapped
voters may find it easier to
vote.
Voters may obtain details
of advance polls from Retur-
ning Officers.

A provision in ,election
legislation also makes it
possible for a friend of the
voter, under oath to carry
out the blind voter's wishes,,
to accompany that person
through the voting process.
mediately after cleaning.
WAXING
Car manufacturers recom-
mend occasional waxing.
The cumulative effect of sun,
rain, grit, and temperature
'changes can dull any car's
finish' but 'a variety :of pro
ducts'can restore the 'sheen.
Again, application by hand is
the best method. The diluted
waxes used in automatic
washes do not last long, and
can coat your windows with
a filen•
Thereare separate
preparations made for at
least five distinct purposes
and shoppers should
distinguish between rubbing,
compounds i restorers 1,
polishing compounds (or
refinishes), cleaners (also
known as polishes), cleaners
(also known as polishes),
cleaner -waxes ( or one-step
waxes) and waxes. •
Even a junk -yard car can
be shined with a "rrub"binng..
compound. The orange paste
contains coarse abrasives
which remove dead, oxidized
paint, deep stains, and scuff
marks. Overly-v7igol'ous rub-
bing can remove the paint ,
down .to bare metal. The
.newly exposed layer of paint
should be waxed immediate-
ly -for -protection. If your ear
is not badly -weathered, it
does not need such severe
treatment. ,
Polishing compound, a •
white paste, . contains finer
abrasives, which will smooth
shallow stains and light scuff
marks. Like rubbing com-
.,pounds, this product con-
tains little wax and bur-
nishes, rather than protects,
metal.
A cleaner or pre -wax can
be a liquid. It shines a car by
removing dirt, filling in ir-
regularities to drakea
smoother .- surface, and
depositing a transparent
film that gives the top coat a
wet look. But it does not pro-
tect the shine as long as a
wax will.
Cleaner -waxes, the most
popular type, combine two
operations in one, and are
often advertised as the "thir-
ty minute wax job". They
are meant for new and
normally -weathered cars,
and contain typically,
solvents, waxes, detergents
and water.
Pure wax does not clean or
provide the mirror finish of a
polish, but protects paint in
two ways: lly forming a bar-
rier between paint and by
keeping moisture out. Waxes
may be parrafin, beeswax,
ti
polyethylene or a montan,
and the more expensive
brands contain hard car-
' nauba wax from Brazilian
palm trees. Wax comes in li-
quid or paste form;
customarily, liquids spread
more easily and pastes
longer, but in today's'market
the differences are slight.
There are special, milder
waxes for new and imported
cars.
