1 w PAGE 6A-G©DERICHSIGNAI„STAR, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 1981 Round 'n' About with Martha I can't believe the time has gone so fast. There are a dozen places I had hoped to get to - but haven't made it. The weather is now settling down and , temperatures have been as high as 82 degrees a couple of times. I have been flying with son Douglas_ and the Florida scene iL as beautiful as ever: Wehad a good look at the Sunshine Bridge which still has a huge gap in the one side. 'They are talking of building a suspension bridge now tohandle the traffic - about 14 miles of it across that causeway. I believe something will be done about this, soon. They are fast workers once they get going. Highway 75 is well under- way. From the air we could see much of it is finished and some travellers were risking a $25 fine for using it before they should - but there-were- miles here-were _miles and miles of it cutting) a off busy Highway 41, so they were making good time. Part of 75 is joining - Highway 41 just out of Sarasota and I suppose it is for the traffic, into Venice. Anyway, I hope it will be finished in time for us to go to Naples - which is the last city on the Gulf before you take the trail through the Everglades over to Miami or the Key West Islands. At Naples every . Spring, they have the Swamp Buggy Races which are really something to -see. This ac- tually takes glace on -the edge=of.-the4ty-glades,-I believe - anyway it is in the swampy area and the bug- gies' uggies' they ° have built for travelling through this area are `.something; else . - you should just see them. They are not the air-;boats.like the troopers use, but more like, an ."air submarine" if you. can picture it. Anyway, they are and I hope we get • there tbit year, I suppose it, will le ' - "sutarin'-off" time right away soon -and I think there are some sheds not far from Goderich where some of this evaporating takes place. One y ,W$,hapPe tQ be.: . in: Quebec at the right tune' and visited two of the shacks - one old and one very up-to- date operation. We enjoyed seeing both of them and. at night all the relatives (Walt's) in that .area gathered where we were visiting and sampled the maple sugar "fresh off the farm". I recall it was very` nice and you quickly had all you could eat - but out came the dill pickles and you sampled some more. Anyway it was fun - try it sometime. It was interesting to see how the evaporators were set up to boil the water out of the sap and bring the sugar to different stages of hard- ness - or the liquid to a slow run. If you have had a good cold winter and you have some maples handy, tapping them may start as early as - the first week in March oras late as the first of April. It takes cold nights and sunny days to produce a run of sap. Also it takes 35-40 gallons of sap to Make one gallon of good syrup. So get your spiles into the trees - it doesn't seem to matter how many tap holes there are on a mature tree. Records show a mature . tree produces from live to 15 gallons from each hole - some up to 40 to 50. Wow! How about THAT? No one. has said if it sets the tree back by robbing it of sap or not - but I expect it can spare a little. I think it takes DAYS to boil it down but you can TRY. The maple sugar season is very short so you must have things ready to go when the season std. It would be fun to do it as a group or just two or three helping a farmer who has a stand of. maples but is not able to do the sugaring business himself: Check on it - some farmer may appreciate your help. And - I must mention this. I'm always trying to do so many things - as soon as I get around to it. Now I have a round tuft. - T[TIT. I'll bring you one if you can use it - let me !mow! OR I'll tell you where you can get one. So until we all get tuft, have a care. Love, Martha. P.S. Hope you enjoyed G.L.T.'s last play. I hope we get home in time for one of thorn: 4 F We reserve the right to limit quantities to normal family requirements. PRICES EFFECTIVE THRU SATURDAY, MARCH 14th, 1981.
