BYTD
GDCI wrestlers Brian
Shewfelt and Steve Berry
participated in the OFSAA
all -Ontario wrestling finals
last Friday and Saturday at
Conestoga College in Kit-
chener.
Steve Berry lost his first
round fight, and since he did
dot lose to a semi-finalist,
was elithinated from the
tournament. However, 'his
coach, Ray Donnelly, felt it
was a mark of achievement
for Berry in only his second
year of wrestling to finish
second in WOSSA and ad-
vance to the all -Ontario
finals.
Brian Shewfelt turned in
an outstanding effort,
finishing fourth overall in his
division. Each weight class
consisted of 34 wrestlers, two
from each of the 17 districts
of Ontario making up Ok7-
Vikings lose Huron -Perth
BY TD
The Stratford Central
Ramblers won the Huron-
perth senior boys' basket-
ball championship by
defeating the Goderich
Vikings two straight games
in the • best -of -three final
series last week.
The Ramblers took game
one in Stratford Thursday 58
- 53 and won the cham-
pionship with a 60 - 47 victory
here Friday. The first game
was not decided until the last
few seconds and was a game
that could have gone either
way.
Rob Froese had 16 points
and Mark Vandeven 14 for
the Ramblers. The Vikings
Phil Aubin led all scorers
with 23. Jim Costello had 12
points for Goderich.
The final game, before a
packed house in the GDCI
gym, was close most of the
way too, but the Ramblers
got some fine outside
shooting late in the game
that made the difference.
The Vikings, who trailed 36 -
\34 entering the final quarter,
got 18 points from Phil Aubin
and 14 from Jim Costello.
Rob Froese again led the
Rams with 25 points and
Scott Huffman added 11.
..Central, the fourth place
team in the regular
schedule, reached the finals
by beating first place
Exeter, 67 - 47 in the semi-
finals. The Vikings, who
finished third, got tO the
finals by clipping the
Stratford Northwestern
Huskies, 60 -49.
In that victory the Vikings
had probably their best
game of the playoffs, putting
things together in a way they
seldom had during the
season. Jim Costello led the
win with 20 points while
Dennis Aubin added 18.
Phil Aubin chipped in with
nine points, Mike Wedlock
had six, Ted Doherty three.
and Kevin Adams and Mike
Murphy two apiece.
The Vikings, as finalists in
Huron -Perth, will advance to
the WOSSA "AA" division
playoffs this weekend at
Sarnia. Their first game will
be Friday at 6 p.m. against
the Oxford -Elgin Conference
top ranked team, Central
Elgin, a team favoured to
take WOSSA honours.
SSA.
Shewfelt wrestled through
the championship round
until only eight wrestlers
remained. He lost his first
match at this point and
moved to the consolation
round where he wrestled to
the finals before losing his
second bout, thus finishing
fourth.
In all, Shewfelt had seven
fights in the Ontario finals
and won five of them. He won
by scores of 22 - 3, 8 - 3, 12 - 1,
6 - 1„ and 8 - 6. His losses were
by 15 - 2 and 12 - 2 scores.
On the strength of this
effort, Shewfelt becomes the
third GDCI Viking wrestler
to be ranked in the top six in
Ontario. Earlier Viking
wrestlers to reach this level
were George Gould who
finished second in Ontario
and Jim Ginn who, like
Shewfelt, finished fourth.
Shewfelt's record for the
1980-81 season shows 56
victories and only five
defeats.
