The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-03-04, Page 37Approach determines easy care A bride's approach to de- corating her first home •or apartment may determine 'a future of easy -care living or long hours spent on home maintenance. • For the bride interested in spending more time with her husband and, less time on_ housework, a practical dec- orating 'strategy will pro- duce a home that is stylish - and easy to care for. Using both standard dec- orating ideas and her own persopal style can result in practical solutions .for an easy -care home. For instance. in 'the' kitchen, decorate for easeas well as style. Hang pots and cooking accessories" within easy reach. • Turn the back of'a kitchen. door into storage space for cleaning supplies. Hang broom, carpet sweeper, mop and other cleaning supplies -from brackets on the back of the door; or hang shelves for a convenient door -back pantry. ' Decorate with low. - maintenance materials, such as carpeting. to.cut down on housework. With the abun- dance of durable fibers and colors available today, car- peting is versatile enough for Decorating: Start at the top Equipping home Equipping a home isn't too much of a problem if both young people are already established in their own apartments- and have their own homemaking, supplies which can be put together in their new home. When the bride has been living in her parents' home, the situation is a bit different and morepurchases have to be made. As a guide to the choice of household supplies, and also as a bare, susistence list, the following suggestions . are made: Table linens—one formal cloth, _.lace ,pr the like; one informal cloth, patterned or solid drip-dry; six table - napkins, hopefully matching both cloths; and four place mats. Household linens --ix sheets for each bed, perhaps three contoured; four pillow cases; one electric blanket for each 'bed or two winter- weight blankets; mattress protectors for each bed and bedspread; six each of Targe 'bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths; two bathmats; guest finger tip towels, terry cloth or linen; shower curtain; six dish towels; two pot holders; two aprons; and cleaning cloths for the kit- chen and furniture. Glassware—For each place setting, a goblet or tall glass for water, a small juice glass and a wine glass. Extras along the way could be old- fashioned glasses, glass bowls and glass serving dishes. China—If you buy by the place setting, as many department stores sell China, you'll need four each: large dinner plates, bread and butter plates, luncheon plates, four cups and saucers, four soup bowls and four fruit nappies, coffee pot, tea pot, cream pitcher and sugar jug and miscellaneous , china for serving dishes. These items can be .really fine china and a second service of, pottery or other casual china can be used for breakfast and lunch. Silver—Place setting for four: A setting usually in- cludes knife, fork, salad fark; teaspoon, butter spreader and dessert spoon which can also be used as a soup spoon. Unless given as gifts, plan to buy extra teaspoons as soon as possible. You can also ex- pand the basics by receiving or buying serving spoons, gravey ladle, sugar tongs and a carving set. Kitchenware --Double boiler; two different sizes of saucepans; two casseroles; roasting pan; grater; colander; frying pan; toaster; covered plastic containers; plastic pail for cleaning; meat grinder, regular or electric; egg beater; set of kitchen knives; stirring spoons; measuring cup and spoons; small cutting board; spatula; flour sifter; tray for serving; garbage can; vacuum cleaner; mop and broom; kettle; and can opener. a number of decorating ap- plications. `. Carpet covered chairs, couches, tables, even walls are `attractive and simple to maintain. A quick run with a Bissell Sweep -Easy carpet sweeper eliminates the con- ventional dusting'and polish- ing that would otherwise be required. Decorative baskets are creative organizers. A Targe trunk -like basket used as a coffee table serves as a stor- age bin for books or can hide the miscellany for a quick clean-up. In the kitchen, baskets can bd hung decoratively to hold recipes, napkins and placemats, and house plant equipment. Desks can be tidied by Pa u- using baskets as catch-al1S for pens, paper, stamps and as files for correspondence. A new bride can have more free time if she spends just a few hours making plans for a home that is stylish and easy to maintain.
