Arsenic and Old Lace, one
of the most durable comedy -
thrillers of all time, will run
from July 29 thipugh August
8. This play willbe directed
by Toronto director James
Saar who recently guest
directed the Gaderich. Little
Theatre_-_ pro iiic tion • of
Witness for the Prosecution.
Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii
will run August 12-22. It is the
work of a former Londoner,
Alan Stratton and premiered
last fall in Toronto. •
The final show, The Music
Man, will run from August 25
until September 12.
Artistic Director, Aileen
Taylor -Smith, says • the
Playhouse season is being
extended past Labor Day so
that Grand Bend residents,
busy all summer catering to
the tourists, will have a
chance to attend.
Openings this year have
been moved up from
Thursdays to Wednesdays
with extra Thursday
matinees a dded_.
Theatre officials have
announced that subscription
sales for 1981 are already up
more than 150 per cent from
last year -1,336 sold so far
compared to 846 last year—
and the main sales campaign
hasn't started yet.
The Playhouse is out to
raise a $1 -million en-
dowment fund over the next iin
three years. It is the smallest
theatre accepted so far in the
Wintario Arts Challenge
Fund. If the Playhouse
raises more than $48,000
each year for the next three
years, Wintario will con-
tribute double the amount.
By raising $333,333 locally by
=1983, the Playhouse stands to
gain $666,666 in grants which
would give it a total of $1
million. The money would be
invested as a financial
cushion.
Special events this sum-
mer include a dance June 6;
.. the annual Monte -Carlo night
June 13; concerts by .the•
Canadian Brass June 20 and
July 20 (the latter for

Profits
down
Higher labour and energy
costs, and increases in grain,
Meat, vegetable and fruit
prices are reducing the pro-
fits of food processors, ac-
cording to the Grocery Pro-
ducts Manufacturers of
Canada. Statistics contained
in the GPMC's newly -
published "Food Price
Facts", reveal that after-tax
profit rates of the food and
beverage industry declined
to an estimated 2.78 cents on
every dollar of sales in 1980,
compared to 3.01 cents in
1979.
For 1980, the industry's
sales were estimated at $29.3
billion, with ' profits after
taxes at $816 million. Capital
spending, the money put into
expansion and moderillza-
tion, amounted to $778.1
million, and almost equalled
profits.
More detailed statistics for
1979 are -contained in the new
publication.
